Got letter saying there are openings to apply for. Did they let too many of us go?

Looks like HR couldn’t find anything better to do, so in order to prove that they’re adding values, they went ahead and created a project just for themselves => a fancy letter announcing job openings. Because nothing screams productivity like finding work for yourself!

Seems nuts. However, if you consider re-enlisting then set your terms pretty high for compensation of lost RSUs and emotional turmoil.
Just call it an id--t tax on Oracle. Oh and keep your options open.
Thx @j6, very interesting. I sent resume to email listed in FedEx letter today. I encourage everyone to do so, even if you don't want to go back. You have nothing to lose. Let's see if they give us a fair chance at these open recs, or if they fabricate missing skills, just to advance the PERM application process. The latter is illegal... think class action suit.
@c6 get what you are getting at, but anything is greener than working for a company who doesn’t value its employees, doesn’t give raises (even COLA), or respect that people have lives outside of work.
I know coworkers who were just laid off last month that got a text out of the blue from managers just to “check in and see how they were doing” hmmm ya, seems like ulterior motive to me
@j6 I think you nailed it: https://www.oalj.dol.gov/DECISIONS/ALJ/PER/2015/In_re_ORACLE_AMERICA_INC_2015PER00308_(MAY_04_2017)_153841_CADEC_SD.PDF
Found out more about this. Most likely we're receiving these letters due to other employees' PERM (greencard) applications. Was told hiring mgrs will find some missing skill to reject us (it's illegal not to give us a fair chance). I encourage everyone to reply promptly.
(Google "oracle sending letters to laid off employees as part of perm process")
So you were laid off in September and got a letter from O that there were job openings? Where are you located - region?
@cz If close to retirement I could see one going back to O if offered a job. You know what you're getting into and with a little luck you can last long enough to reach your goal.
And yes, this is all about them saving money.
Maybe it's some sort of experiment to see how many people respond to their codes.
@cy when I was let go, it wasn’t because I was bad at my job. The standard line was we’re going in a different direction, but you are eligible for rehire. I’ve been at this job for a long time, and it was more a case of them keeping cheap labor than it was for ability.
I have concerns about going to a company that was willing to do that again however, I just need a short bridge and then I’m done anyway
@cp That is strange. What I have observed in my sojourn between large tech employers is that they don't try to move people to new jobs instead of laying them off, because they want you gone. In some cases you can't be rehired for a year. To have them send you a letter via FedEx or USPS seems weird.
@cp same.
This letter shows up just as the phone starts to ring with new job opportunities. Something happened this week it seems because it’s been crickets for the last month then suddenly a deluge starting Monday. Anyone else experiencing the same?
@cp Get an Oracle employee to refer you and splt the referral bonus.
Such great business sense to pay severance then hire some of those folks back at higher salaries.
Wonder what employer loyalty any returning employees would feel though.
they stole your RSUs. simple as.
I also got a letter by FedEx.
Just got same letter delivered. Very generic... "hiring all job levels/types". I'm a principal level (IC4) engineer based in NH. Laid off from OCI native app team Sep 22. Quite confused why they would do this. They did not try to save or move anyone during layoffs.
Isn't it the case that the only way to get a significant payrise is to leave and come back anyway ?
Would anyone really want to though.
Chairman Powell has been ki-ling jobs as one of the few tools he has too bring down inflation for some years now. In this year it has coincided with all of Trumps tariff negotiations and changes. Both of these actions are settling down now at the same time and the number crunchers like Anna Wong at Bloomberg ADP are seeing the tepid jobs recovery beginning. Kathy Woods is also now predicting good growth for 2026. New bills are getting introduced in congress to remove deductions for foreign labor and taxation for outsourcing. If this is the real future companies may need to rethink who they need and if they want to retrain people in the USA from scratch.
@as I too know of a few who were rehired, some after a few years working at other jobs. It does happen, and contrary to popular belief here, the grass isn't always greener on the other side of the fence.
The redundancy agreement normally states that in the event of a rehire within the first 12 months after termination you'd need to reimburse all or part of the redundancy payment.
Throw the letter to the thrash where it belongs and never look back.
@as You cannot step in the same river twice.
@a6 That's not true, I know of many folks that have come back, for better or worse, after being laid off.
Particularly in this cycle they are letting a lot of very good staff go - as a hiring manager, when the opportunity arises you will much more likely go for a known quantity that has a network in the company instead of take a gamble on someone that you don't know
A good friend who was let go in the last big round also got a call from a recruiter encouraging him to reapply for basically the same role but in a slightly different group.
Insanity!
It looks that they feel that the boat is sinking. Just throw the rehire letter to the trash bin, no worthy to consider.
@a7 i got one too. what type of pos, sw dev ?
@a6 true; but at the RIF, I was told that I was eligible for rehire. Thinks it’s weird, though, that they sent a FEDEX letter giving me a job code to send my resume for.
One concern, if I were to get a rehire is severance payback. They’ve already taken out taxes.
Normally they don't rehire people they just fired.
