@cb The US has graduated more CS students than ever before. The problem is economics and perceived value. Companies will require a four year degree and experience for US applicants to a developer role but will happily fill it for 30 cents on the dollar with an offshore person who's been to the equivalent of a two year code camp and has no experience.

AI summary of the ~$400M Coinbase Hack

In mid-2025, Coinbase disclosed a significant security breach that compromised the personal information of nearly 70,000 customers. The incident is notable for using "old-school" bribery rather than technical exploits to bypass security.

Breach Details & Impact

  1. Method: Cybercriminals bribed overseas customer support contractors (primarily from TaskUs in India) to take photos of customer screens and provide access to internal support tools.
  2. Stolen Data: Compromised information included names, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, the last four digits of Social Security numbers, masked bank account details, and images of government-issued IDs.
  3. Direct Losses: While Coinbase's core infrastructure and private keys were not hacked, the leaked data was used in sophisticated social engineering and phishing attacks to trick users into transferring funds.
  4. Financial Impact: Coinbase estimated remediation and reimbursement costs would range from $180 million to $400 million.

@c8 Spare us your self righteous hand wringing. Offshoring to India and other low cost centers is a big problem and one which needs addressing.

Yet they overhauled the "brand identity" to focus on red, white and blue because they're U.S. Bank and they publish marketing content that says our customer service is"100% based in the U.S.A."

There is a lot of great talent in India. But I think it's a tragedy that we are hurting Americans by laying off and sending jobs overseas. There are so many reasons to keep talent here, plenty of qualified people. I wouldn't be going for a computer science degree when corporate America only cares about profits. We aren't saving money long term when they are in different time zones and you can only have meetings the first two hours of your work day. And USB claims to care about the communities here, which is BS when they are the problem with our economy and unemployment rates

The root cause of the U.S. technology talent gap and subsequent outsourcing to India/China lies in the structure of our 8-12 high school education system. While U.S. high schools provide a broader education, their math and science curriculum lacks the rigor found in India and China, where competition (IIT-JEE, Gaokao) drives the top 10% to master graduate-level STEM concepts by 12th grade.

Consequently, "for-profit" U.S. enterprises frequently outsource technical labor, paying roughly 20-30% of domestic wages for highly skilled offshore professionals. To reverse this trend, we must move beyond venting and implement fundamental reforms, significantly intensifying the STEM focus within our own high school curriculum to improve average student aptitude.

Key Changes Required:
• Intensify Core Curriculum: Elevate 11th and 12th-grade math/science requirements to focus on higher-level analytical skills.
• Specialized Instruction: Implement specialized STEM teachers and curricula similar to international standards, rather than relying solely on generalist approaches.
• Focus on Rigor: Increase the academic rigor to ensure graduates can compete with international peers in advanced STEM fields

Let’s stop with the BS racism. No doubt GK is a useless player but insulting a whole nation is childish and frankly disgusting. Speaks more to you and your character than anything else.

Focus on what’s broken - the system that creates a huge incentive to cut costs at the expense of everyone else.

And again stop with the racism of the Middle Ages. We are past that as a nation. Check the calendar. It’s 2026.
