@cs You will never be able to focus on work if you are safe (for now) and keep hearing "rumors". Here's my advice as someone who has been through a reorg/layoffs prior to TGT: Always keep that one foot out networking, meeting new Linkedin connections and making other connections within your industry because that way, when the axe falls, at least you've done your homework in advance. I see people at TGT who have a Linkedin profile but very few connections, very little activity, and then are needing to do catch-up.

I knew there was going to be a technical difficulty. I could just feel it in my bones. That is just the icing on the cake of this sh-tshow.

Based on certain people I know who did NOT receive the invites, I think it's fair to say that performance was probably not a major factor lol...

I’m sure there are people who were low performers that got invites but I know a lot of the people who got the invites that were some of the most talented and best people. My heart hurts right now.

Do not defend the people who would cut your job for 0.012% profit margin.

@c1 it was too long ago that the inflation rate was the worst it has been in 40 years. DEI initiatives starting around 2020 and the recent rollbacks have caused the stock to drop a substantial amount, which equates to investor losses, which in turn puts pressure on the ceo/board to make changes and cuts. The DEI initiatives upset both sides of the line at different times. The right 4 or 5 years ago, and the left earlier this year. Upsetting all guests based on the decisions made has more impact than tariffs. Tariffs can impact prices, but upsetting guests will stop the foot traffic.

4 people on my team have received the 9am invite. 3 people in more senior/principal roles (not sure what L that equates to), and one L4. All ICs, no managers. Only 1 is remote.

@c4 The stock market is not real life. The quarterly financial results are real and you can draw a direct line between tariffs going up and reduced profit. Amazon is laying off 10% of their people today - their stock is doing well; are they also reducing staff because of boycotts or because of larger economic trends?

@c1 look at the stock prices over the last three years - major dips lining up with all our major PR failures (Pride 1 and 2 and DEI). Before the tariffs.

@b2 lmao welp tell that to the mom of 2 who is extremely prompt and performs extremely consistently that who likely got eliminated from my team. In my area it was straight up a lot of ageism and "trimming the fat" of categories that will likely be downsized despite good performance unfortunately

@by It was definitely the tariffs more than anything. When the cost of goods are suddenly 60-120% more, retailers can't just eat that cost. It's contributed to a larger macroeconomic environment where everything has skyrocketed in costs and of course consumers can't keep spending like they were.

The boycotts aren't insignificant but they also are a thing only terminally online people know about.

Anyone in Design/PDD Teams get emails? What levels? What Divisions?

@by yup. Communications/PR failures of our own making. These started way before tariffs.

@bt it's not because of the tariffs. Boycotts over the last year and half hurt more than tariffs. How many consecutive quarters of decling sales?

@bt lol you act like he’s new he’s always been part of the horrible decision making he’s also just a pawn for butthole Cornelly as chairman who will still be running the board due his buddy bud friendship with Trump

I'm in a relatively unaffected area (GSCL) and just sampled a group of about 200 people's calendars. Only saw 4 with the meeting invite of death. All 4 of them were L6-L7s with a lot of tenure at Target and 3 out of the 4 were remote. So seems fair to say that your working arrangement is a factor in their decision.

I feel for everyone being let go, but those effected will all need to dust themselves off and rise above this. Life will go on and a better opportunity might be waiting around the corner. As someone who has worked in both small and large companies, a large company is all about "bottom line". If you aren't contributing bottom line, you are vulnerable to being let go. The sheer number of leadership positions at Target was unfathomable from a efficiency and cost perspective. The new CEO was schooled as a engineer and is a numbers man, no fluff, just profitablity. The company's performance was lagging, so today's layoffs are the sad and painful result of that lackluster performance. 2021 COVID year numbers are not 2025 tariff numbers.
