Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Looking for guidance

I’m being asked to relocate as part of RTO to a location where my current skillset does not have long-term scope in ATT, so I chose to go to HQ that may offer more internal opportunities and some extended family support.

Now I’m second-guessing the decision. The move is coming up soon, and I’m worried about relocating my family only to face a layoff later because it is not the assigned location as per new presence indicators. What to do?

“It’s been said before, but I’ll repeat in case you’re new here.”
It doesn’t matter how many times you repeat false info It doesn’t become true just because you repeat it. RTO is about longterm collaboration where employees within a department will be located together. It will take some pain to get there with many employees unsblroo or willing to move, but the end state will be better productivity. Too many people are taking this personally when it is really just needs of the business.

You can always change the planned relocation to a resignation. You will lose your severance but no longer have to move.

T found me useful for 3 years. I have had my share of job searching for 4 years and couldn’t land a single offer. If I need to keep my family running with my sole income, I need to relocate to wherever they ask. I have seen H1Bs survive and some very qualified citizens survive the move after going to Dallas. How many more years they will have a job is no one knows. Dallas offers more job opportunities than remotes like Charlotte or Arlpharetta. Uprooting life for T makes sense only if you have no other income coming.

@OP, you’re not the first nor the last to go through this stressful move, and face the uncertainty. It’s not an easy decision or situation. But you’ll find many who have done so under similar circumstances. Now that you’ve committed, take each day one at a time. Build up your network, skills & self everyday knowing that your (and most of us) have limited time here.

It’s been said before, but I’ll repeat in case you’re new here. RTO this HQ consolidation nonsense has nothing to do with productivity. It’s about cutting head count. If you and your role were necessary to the company, they would not have asked/required you to move. As a result, you are now a target. That means, it’s only a matter of time until HR achieves the goal of ridding T of your expense.
