Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Unexpected layoff notification?

This writing has been on the wall for longer than a minute. Relocate if required and RTO or risk losing your employment if you choose to gamble. It is a personal choice. It isn't as if you first heard about it only yesterday. You will find no sympathy from AT&T if you are unhappy about the position you find yourself in today and continue to refuse to accept responsibility for yourself and your family. Coasting along when you should have been adapting and planning.

They hired you to work in a different location, you have family, friends, life and now you have to ditch it for a bald d**k? No way!

@ae
"only 1-5% will be those who should have been surplussed"

and this is why the company has been on the slow path to failure for more than 50 years

It’s not that I’m lazy, it’s just that I don’t even care.

I laugh at the term strong performer.
Recently the Union and Management moved a tech into POWER, that is slightly dangerous.
Ever other crew this tech was on got rid of him one way or another.

The 4 workers we've lost have been strong contributors. All one can do is prepare for your own departure in the absence of guidance on what is required to stay.

I know the fear of constant
Layoffs is a terrible work environment. I also realize there are ways to run the business with less people. For one thing as we move more and more away from copper we don’t need as many people. Most of you that have a good overview of the whole company realize we have a lot of people that don’t do a whole lot. Y’all seem more worried about reporting to the office than layoffs lately. I believe it’s BlackRock/Vanguard putting immense pressure on JS to accelerate layoffs, buy Lumen, cut network maintenance etc.

@b5

You have to continue to be a strong performer. You can’t just move to be safe. Who would even think that?

As if being a strong performer will save your job. If you don’t believe me, ask the thousands of employees that have been laid off that were strong performers. In the end, even your performance won’t save your job. When it’s your time, it’s your time, period.

I can't think of a better way to track who the least valuable contributors are than seeing which people are at 100% compliance on RTO. These are the paper-pushing midwits who know they have minimal marketability outside AT&T and will jump through whatever hoops they are presented to keep their jobs where they are overpaid to produce nothing of value. 0% compliance should be grounds for promotion and 100% compliance should be on the chopping block.

@ae good explanation for the randomness of being selected for surplus

You are so inarticulate, we can’t tell if this is a statement or a question or just a worthless observation.

I’m going with the latter.

That said, lay me off. I’ll take a couple million plus my severance, and happily move along.

Until then I’ll keep my head down and keep doing my job.

And you can just bite me.

"Coasting along when you should have been adapting and planning"

Like, I've seen this train wreck coming for 5 years and I did nothing to minimize the impact it could have in my life? This is the Whining forum. You're looking for the Adulting forum.

@a2 Yup. Many compliers move, rto, and still get the axe. Its common knowledge. If you are non-bargained or exempt, you are in the layoff pool. A mentor once told me that the best way to avoid being selected is to always be expecting to happen. We don't value loyalty here and doing you job is not enough. Think of it like skydiving. If the guy who packed your chute is having a bad day, following the rules probably won't save you from an uncomfortable meeting with the ground.

@OP Any business with a high employee headcount struggles to right-size and do so efficiently.  It is reasonably likely 15% or more of 130,000 employees don't produce a positive return on the investment made in them.  Their roles are either unnecessary or they contribute at a minimal level.  Unfortunately the exercise of right-sizing is left to the many (too many) levels of leadership originally responsible for the bloated headcount.  Each level of leadership will protect their unnecessary administrative employees and those in the good old boy network. In the end we may see a 15% reduction in headcount, but only 1-5% will be those who should have been surplussed.  The remainder are comprised of hard working contributors.  OP, I have reason to be concerned.

@OP I viewed it as a job for life until 2014. Been preparing since then by continuously expanding skills, saving and investing, and networking extensively outside of ATT. Today I view it as the company losing an asset if my role is selected for surplus. Not concerned at all.

You're on the layoff list if you comply either way bozo. No doubt you'll be crying when they get to you and change your attitude. Everyone go get other jobs and leave this conpany that hates you.
