Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Why are critical roles never backfilled?

It's like everyone forgets once the layoffs are done. There's only so much the rest of us can absorb, and some things just can't be picked up at all. There's never any follow-up, no real attempt to readjust after the cuts, and zero attention to the important work that's simply not getting done anymore.

That's the beauty of focusing on wholesale while ditching digital. You can run the business from an excel sheet with a dozen people per geo. Who needs 5 9's of uptime when your customers make a single order at the beginning of the season.

This is the new IT dynamic in the “AI does it all” era..

Us in tech fully realize big parts of that “ai does all” are complete cr-p but still, this is the job market.

Compress down to fewer and fewer people wearing more hats and using ai as their backfill/helper.

Working on Windows servers? cool! you get linux next. got that? cool now you get networking gear. That used to be three teams soon enough it will be one and even smaller.

Does it work? nope but hey… Accounting will be happy.

Meanwhile we wasted 3 billion and 10 years on SEC alone

2 billion on NFT rugpull

1 billion on adobe

1 billion on bay area tech centre

4 billion on yearly software subscription costs between 2019-2025

Just think what could have been done with RATs mess

I’ve been thru many reorgs where roles that were approved and included on the planned org chart never got filled, due to budget. So we were trying to function in a new offense where those positions owned important work but there was no one in the role to do it. And no budget to backfill roles that come open when people quit. The result was that the new offense never got executed as envisioned, because we never fully staffed it. When JD said “we aren’t winning,” I wanted to tell him it’s tough to win as a team when the roster is half full and everybody is trying to cover multiple positions at once.

No managers left to care about you or the ones that are left absorbed all direct / non-direct reports from the ones laid off to the point of not having any time to focus on any one thing anymore.

Some managers fill holes that don’t exist just to “seem busy”. Let’s get real, less people means less leadership needed and we all know in the land of unethical unicorns we would never want that to be the perception in certain groups. They just keep building their empire…..

If people are laid off to achieve cost reductions, backfilling those positions is counter productive. Think it through...

Real question. What innovation from gt are you referring to? Sh-t search functionality to arrive on an endless grid wall of poorly assorted product has been around for a while.

If they were critical they’d be backfilled. It’s because your manager doesn’t think they’re critical.

Because they backfill in ITC now, I firmly believe EH wants nothing to do with GT being any sort of innovative pipeline. We are a shoe company after all, why be managing software, just pay the autoclick workers in ITC to press the AI prompt ok button, not review and ship it, wait for it to blow up, prompt to fix and repeat
