Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Trump signs proclamation imposing $100K annual fee for H-1B visa applications

T and other companies in US might have a very big impact because of this.

@jr not if you read the order. People who have to renew who originally payed 250 will still pay 250 unless the leave the country for vacation. Not to mention the 100,000 is tax deductible SO that’s a 50,000 dollar deductible every year. It’s still a HUGE win for H1B holders. I would argue an even better win because of the 50,000 per year deductible meaning I’m paying almost zero in taxes when you add in all the other deductions. I might get a second Tesla .

@ce are you sure? I read that it will also apply to renewals

This will force companies to offshore even more work. Unless it’s medical field between AI and the Technology to offshore. The American Technology workers are still burned. BUT!! I hope I’m wrong

What may change from now on is that Indian coworkers will be perceived differently, "dude, are you here because you are more experienced, more capable, more intelligent than me, or just because you are cheap?"

I worked with many that got promoted and only because they (1) play politics and (2) were cheaper to promote money-wise. Talent? ZERO. The entire quality slowly went down and down, those of us trying to do a good job were discounted more and more, until we started to slowly say "well, if this is how it's going to be, whatever".

Kinda sad.

read the fine print ... all the Indians got in under the wire and their renewal will be at old rates . it is going to be business as usual unless you stalk your elected leaders social media accounts and call out the loopholes .

If you travel around the world you will notice that people are tired of the Indians going around taking jobs from everyone else. You forgot Canada. They were late to notice, but they are noticing now.

They were just cheap and the reality was different, not anymore.

Keep blaming the little guy instead of blaming big corporations and billionaires profiting off Americans. U.S. unemployment rate is expected to slightly increase over the next three years, potentially reaching around 4.6% by mid-2026.
Conservatively 4.6% unemployment rate in the U.S. would mean that approximately 7.8 million people will be unemployed. Thats not including the job losses from AI.

Apologies again, TACO. Just to clarify — the new fee will apply only to new applicants under next year’s quota. Existing visa holders and renewals won’t be affected.

Looking ahead, companies are likely to ramp up offshore hiring while accelerating layoffs here. In a way, this change might actually work in their favor.

So Bob and Dave... those $500K manager roles at Google you were eyeing? Probably not happening. 😅

They should apply this on renewal petitions too to wipe out the abuse by existing folks. That is when things will come back to 1995

why not, college students are taking out loans for 100k , majoring in c.s., and losing out on job opportunities to the 3rd world.

Ahh, yeah. Several of my coworkers was unlucky enough to be 'outsourced' to our pals at Infosys. Senior product engineers one day, bottom rung of the ladder the next. It was a shame. 2 different sets of rules. Language barriers. The goal went from building the best products to billing the most hours.

I see this as forcing our vendors to have a little more skin in the game. Every contractor must be worth their salt because they will be competing with lower cost, non h1b, badgedemployees who will hopefully have an interest in delivering successful products on time and under budget.

Stinker will hate it so we know its a good thing!

The truth of the matter is India decided to side with Russia and China and bought oil from Russia cheap and resold it. Know the old saying F around and Find out FAFO!

Hey dimwit, it's important to recognize that artificial intelligence is taking over our jobs. This could force us to relocate to countries we may not want to move to just to provide for our families. Please consider this before sharing your opinions. America may become a paradise for billionaires, and many of us might find ourselves excluded from that future. Think about it.

@b1 Have you ever worked with the our overseas coworkers? If not, here's what you can expect when you do.... They are incapable of doing fundamental analysis of any problems they face. They are constantly looking for someone else to do their job. They are unable to read documentation. Instead, they must have it read to them during a call. Bottom line.... They're unable to escape from a wet paper bag and are constantly stuck on broken escalators.

Why do companies want the Indian workers? Is it because they are actually educated and work hard. Maybe the issue isn’t about lesser pay but really about Americans not having the education to do the work.
We are losing the battle of education among educated countries.

In the grand scheme of things 100,000 on a two year visa is not meaningful when it comes to the telecom and tech jobs that these companies are allowing these people from India to snap up. That’s why the offshore program worked so well for them. We need an external revenue service, and we need too expose the fake news media that is trying to sweep this under the corporate rug.

Yep, tax the sheet out of off-shoring too. Tariffs, tariffs, tariffs!

I think we can all agree that, one 100,000 isn’t meaningful and it would take a minimum of 200,000 to be effective and two, telecoms and tech companies use need to be paying into an external revenue service a minimum of 300,000 per external state side employee to curb off shore labor.

Now they need to do something about all the corporations that are eliminating jobs here in the US and moving the jobs internationally.

Better now, than later or never. The damage is done, but let's not make it bigger and protect the middle class.

Stankey will need to think of another trick to make his margins look "healthy" every quarter.

@OP too little too late
It doesn’t matter anymore, because what about the several thousand employees already working for ATT in international hubs all over the world ? maybe in ten years when majority of the Att workforce is offshore, then and only then, the US will react, and then again, too little too late.
