Let me tell you how a real leader (see the no quotes?) actually leads…. (well OK a couple of things).
- They come to the table with some past success and industry specific knowledge.
- They understand the current company environment.
- They ask many questions.
- They have an idea, a direction, a philosophy that guides strategy. Things like “we are here to enable the Business and the only way to enable them is to TALK TO THEM about what they need, what their pain points are, let them vent a little about technology (don’t we all do that? darn computers sometimes).
- There is a lot more but saving the very best for last…. TALK TO YOUR TEAM… at every turn.. learn from them… what do they see as pain points? what are their ideas for improving? make sure they are connected with the business and having regular, candid communication on improving.
So many of our “leaders” have decided they know what’s best for the business without even talking to them. OR they gaslight their own team by talking to the business without the team there.
What is a REAL, PRODUCTIVE, USEFUL all hands? When Tech and the Business work together and establish common goals.
Not Tech going off and doing it’s own thing and not the Business complaining (even if it’s accurate sometimes) about how Tech isn’t helping them.
This fundamental disconnect is why this board is sometimes spanned by “Tech is lame” posts.
