Got the severance payment. What if I don't return the laptop & keep it? Can they come after me? Lets just say its not a brick/locked out.

@14r Only laptop(s) and yubiKeys need to be returned.
@yp While true, is it worth the potential hassle if O comes after you? Just return the stupid thing. How much is the old clunker worth? $200?
@14r I think you can keep that stuff. That way when it eventually breaks, and since it's old it will soon break, you will pay the recycling fee,
I guess that O could be serious about laptops (and what they contain) and I wouldn't keep mine after a layoff... but what about monitors, mouses, airpods, etc. Is this stuff required to be returned as well?
You’re not gonna break the Bank of Larry if you steal these used laptops
"It doesn't make sense that O employees would want to steal laptops"
That is true, but they are no longer Oracle employees.
You can send any old equipment in - they don't care enough to check. I sent in a totally dead laptop once when I quit O about 12 years ago, and then again more recently when was laid off. "Your Dell turned into a Lenovo? Whatever."
My guess is that Oracle does not own the laptops outright, rather they have leased them from an organization like Hamilton. They have their own commitments to return or pay.
Theft of trade secrets.
Nah. The data on the drive is encrypted and tied to the laptop hardware. Pull it, reformat it, and you’re good to go.
Theft of trade secrets.
Just pulll some of the internal components, like the SSD and memory. Then either sell them on eBay or use them in your own machine. The techs taking possession of your old laptop won’t find out right away and will later think that another tech did it.
So you’re saying you got a laptop worth keeping? I can’t wait to send mine back lol.
When I was a manager, one of my IDC resigned during the pandemic without returning the laptop. Two years after I’d still get emails from HR in India asking me (in US) to follow up on the return, even though I didn’t have any connection with the guy.
@am SO you're saying tha CZ is a "low trust" society?
A penny stolen from Larry is a penny earned
Oracle leadership are basically mentally ill with money lust, every single penny they fiend for.
Why temp fate by going up against these insanely greedy people and taking their laptop that they might get $10 for via hardware recycling, it could add $10 to their beloved bottom line.
@aj
You can’t take it from Oracle, but Larry could probably go to your house and take anything he wants. You might call the police, but the case will probably be dropped by the powers that have taken over.
Unless it’s an ultra powerful laptop worth 10K+, what do you want it for? Just return it and stop by the local thrift store to buy it back.
Keep it as a parting gift from Uncle Larry. He doesn't need or want it back.
I'm surprised O wants them back, especially the older, out of date models that are likely worthless in the resale market.
Just give them back, it’s not yours.
Why tempt fate?
my guess is the person is from CZ and here ppl like to steal ... (flashback at president stealing a pen on air)
@aj you are not allowed by (((them))) to break the law, you are a go--m pleb, laws will be enforced on you
@ae I don't know if you noticed or not, but pretty much crime is now legal. you can launch all the sh-t coin rug pulls you want, you can defraud all you want, you can ignore court rulings, you can collude and sell secrets to foreign Nations all you want, you can do whatever you want now, we don't have laws or rules anymore. so long as you have money
crime is now legal, for a fee
@OP the owner of that laptop is oracle, not you. Not sure about every legal framework for every country but you can be held liable for theft.
@OP Technically, keeping it is probably deemed theft. Why on earth would you want the risk?
In the spirit of Frozen ..... Let it go.
Why tempt fate? Unless you want Larry to tie a real brick to your ankles and toss you into the deep off the coast of his private island.
