Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

#opentowork posts everywhere

You can't open LinkedIn without being hit with so, so many of those. The thought of entering the job market in current conditions is terrifying, to say the least.

@ae Very well said. My dad would always say that the best time to find a job, is when you already have one.

@ae Facts. I’m out of work and starting to consider maybe it’s the end of my tech career.

It IS terrifying. That's why if you have a job, no matter how toxic the workplace is, or how much you hate what you're doing, you are paying your bills and feeding yourself and/or family. Look while you are working.

For all its faults, Linkedin is the closest we've come so far to having a professional networking site, so it's advisable to make use of it with Indeed and Glassdoor.

What we're looking at here:

fake job postings - you've heard of them being called "ghost postings". The company has no intention of filling that position, possibly just building an inventory of resumes for future needs, or making themselves look more prosperous than they are to shareholders to keep the stock price up.

Scammers playing at being recruiters - they are having a FIELD day. Lots of warnings about them on Linkedin, but that's not the only place you're going to see them. I was getting emails from people saying they were hiring for jobs, but they are using a gmail.com or outlook.com (or even some .site domains. Run at top speed away from those).

You'll also hear a lot about ATS systems, scanning and discarding resumes before humans even see it. What's probably really good advice is to customize your resume for each posting, making sure the proper keywords are in there to get past ATS. Job postings are getting hundreds if not thousands of applicants, nobody has the bandwidth to sort though that, and if they get promising candidates in the first 50 or 100 or so, they stop looking.

What's happening too is you might have to endure up to seven interviews. Spend the time and effort to prepare for these interviews only to get ghosted in the end. If you DO manage to get interviews, and are fortunate enough to get a job offer, don't quit your job until you get the offer letter signed and turned in with a start date. Anything can and often does happen at any step in the hiring process.

Take care of your mental health, spoil yourself in other ways, but keep your job until you have one to go to - trust me, not being able to pay your bills is worse stress than a toxic workplace.
