Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Burned out but stuck

I've become one of the twenty percent who carries the load and I'm now thoroughly exhausted. The other eighty percent show up, do the minimum, and clock out. I work late, fix problems, keep things running. I want to leave but I've got too much built up here. Years of vacation time, a team that depends on me, a family that needs my paycheck. Plus, the job market feels risky right now. So I stay and burn a little more each day. It's a terrible spot to be in. And to think, Nike was considered a great employee once upon a time.

Same boat… here’s what I’ve worked out… Make sure you do a good job socializing your wins in Q4. Now is not the time to phone it in. maybe start making progress on your job search, but not to the detriment of your core work. Calibration is ahead of schedule this year. Leaders are already thinking through their “keeps” v “cuts”. If you do get impacted, sounds like you have decent tenure and can put your full effort into the search if in the worst case that happens. Start planning ways to scale back in Q1and beyond. Put yourself in the best position you can to be someone people want on their team and give yourself the best chance to get through this layoff. once you make it, things will be a sh-t show and nothing will be getting done for a while. Then you can ramp up your efforts to find something different and have more options. I’m committing to this plan, and maybe it will work, maybe it’s a moot point. Who knows?

Put the load down friend. Do it gradually, otherwise you’ll be punished. Spend the next six months learning how to mail it in. Deflect. Suggest someone else take it.

Word of warning: No one is irreplaceable at Nike. It does not matter how much work you do or how important you perceive your job. You are just another number on a spreadsheet.

leaders love it when you can delegate, take some of that pto, take a week, look for work, rest. Seed the delegation on your team slack channel, then follow up with your manager, see who steps up or how they handle it
nike doesn't need any one person, they are a machine and they will hire it out in itc, or figure it out, don't carry their burden on your shoulders, not worth it

Start doing less. Tell your sd you are overwhelmed and there are lots of idle hands available. Have them watch who comes in when and who is contributing. They will see it and assign work if they are serious about doing their own job.

There is nothing stopping you from interviewing and getting an offer. You can always say no. Staying at Nike is a bigger liability than leaving.
