Combatting Mental Health Effects

Wondering what people are doing to try and keep some mental sanity in tact amid the chaotic culture and toxicity, particularly when the market outside doesn’t look like a good alternative right now. I’ve been trying to get into some ‘zen’ type outlets like Yoga and journaling, and it really does help. Doesn’t seem like there’s any other way out of a spiraling mental cluster but would love to hear how others are coping.

@rh No offense but I’m surprised you haven’t been riffed. Having any sort of personal or health issue puts most people on a riff list. At least that has been what I’ve seen in other areas.

Does anyone else see the cruel irony of a HEALTH insurance company filled with workers who are suffering from poor health due to the working conditions?

@ta Thank you for the detailed response. That helps. My manager told me they would not be involved at all with the accommodation request/review/approval, that basically it would be a battle between me and HR. There is no logical reason to continue forcing me to make the long commute considering my health issues because I don't work with anyone at the office. There isn't a single person in my entire department working at that location. My manager doesn't even report into a PulsePoint location.

@pd
There are mechanisms in place to file for accommodations related to the office. You do have to submit it as an official accommodation request. There's a link and button on the front page of pulse for that form and information.

Your manager cannot themselves grant the accommodation for this. It's tracked and reported to all levels of leaders. There are no exceptions without an actual accommodation in place.

So yes, you can get this done, but there's unfortunately a process. You will have to file for an accommodation which does entail a doctor's note and interaction with your manager and the accommodations team. To knowledge, your specific medical information is not shared, merely your need for a type of accommodation and what you're requesting.

For everyone -- this place isn't worth your physical or mental health. Take control of the options you have. The company does offer external services or leaves of absence can be an option. Nothing here will change overnight. Your health and wellbeing might.

I started having panic attacks in my second year with the company. I've never had job related stress and never have had panic attacks before. The cause was the toxic environment and some really cr-ppy people I worked with. In the end, I grabbed the RIF package and moved on. I have not had panic attacks since I left. If this place is hurting your health, you should leave if possible. It's just a cr-ppy insurance company, there are much better places to work, thrive and learn.

From @pd I am not working like I was before. My level of productivity has gone into the cr_pper since I was forced to commute 1+ hour each way to an office every week. I am completely homebound on weekends and have a service deliver medications, food and groceries.

@pd i could give you suggestions - but regardless HR will only accept the MD accommodation for a year and then you will have to do it again if you are still here - they may also wonder how "you are able to work as sick as you are now" - maybe start with you cannot drag all this equipment in alone and need someone to meet you at the door to haul it for you after you recover from a stressfully long commute

I can't get the truth from my management nor HR, so I thought I would ask on this site. I have several medical conditions that I should have fought from the start with HR not to have to go to an office since I received zero support when speaking to my manager about it at the time go to an office started. I won't say Return to Office because I purposely looked for a fully remote job a decade ago due to my health conditions getting worse. I was hired at this company as a fully remote employee. Now almost two years later of reporting into an office with over a 1-hour commute once a week where I work with nobody directly nor indirectly, I am ready to drop to the floor physically. What do I need from my doctor to present to HR to return to full time remote work due to numerous medical conditions? My list of medical conditions is almost a page long now thanks to this company. With HIPAA rules, does my doctor have to list each specific medical condition preventing me from commuting over an hour to an office? Having to haul lunch and the entire office content back and forth each time just makes matters worse. Thanks in advance for any advice.

people have actual developed health conditions, hypertension, severe anxiety and depression, out of control diabetes, inability to sleep or even enjoy life - when you are tied to a desk all day, when you have to eat at your desk, when you can't go to the bathroom without coming back to " I called you but you did not answer, or I IM you but you did not answer" - its disgusting - and where is your boss - on their 5th vacation of the year and you havent had even one,

Took a leave of absence. Several people on my team were doing it so I did the same.

@a9; Looks like @a2’s post was removed (I didn’t know that feature was available here). I do recall reading it and it didn’t make sense to me, so I just ignored it. Wasn’t worth commenting on. Only replying here so I and others can search for the how to delete posts process. Makes one think who can and can’t edit or delete posts. If SLT lackeys can, that puts a bit of bias on what we’re seeing.

@a2: WTF? Typos I can understand - we’ve all fat fingered while texting our phone. Victim of auto speller - happens often. Failure to proofread - that’s on you. Total nonsensical stupidity - you should be flogged for putting it out there.
Try again, check what you’ve entered, and maybe we’ll understand the point of your gibberish.
