Thread regarding T-Mobile layoffs

All the stress is getting to me

At the risk of sounding whiny, it would be great not to constantly worry about losing my job with all the obligations I have. If you have a family, it's really difficult not to feel under immense pressure all the time. People having decently paid jobs for long stretches sounds more like a myth these days. I truly wish we all had more stability in exchange for working hard and a lot.

@a5 That's right! It's the YOUNG people that ruined it! As we know, they're the ones in the C-suite these days...

@OP - Totally agree! Be fiscally responsible in a country that advertised trickle-down economics then never trickled the money down is a rich thing to say. With that said, let's be clear, job hopping to get more money is not the employee's fault. Companies should pay their employees a competitive wage to keep them. If they would've done that, they wouldn't have a turnover problem. Especially since the cost of simply paying the ones you have a competitive wage versus replacing an employee is better on the budget and builds a healthier work environment. But sure, let's blame the ones who are getting underpaid at one place only to find a living pay at another for the same work - ok... Back to the @OP - it does su-k to live in this perpetual state of worry about our jobs and income. Stability sounds like a dream at this point. It's so stressful and makes it hard to plan for the future. I'm just trying to remind myself that it's out of my hands so focusing on controlling what I can, even if that means updating my resume, LinkedIn bio or browsing open jobs to see what's out there. Do your job, take space for you, and best of luck.

@a5 Agree about fiscal responsibility.

However…Corporations stopped investing in employees before job hopping became popular. Pensions to job training to sincere appreciation of your time and efforts. You wanted to go out and have a drink with your coworkers, those you considered true friends including your manager, not be subjected to forced potlucks and lame games. I.e. “whoever tells me which year uncarrier 2.154 came out first wins a pink pencil.”

@OP You have to deal with competing ideologies. Certain age groups have gotten into the bad habit of job hopping in search of higher wages, which in turn makes employers less willing to invest existing employees or hire new ones. The best you can do is to live a fiscally responsible lifestyle and quit trying to keep up with the jones financing everything with debt.
