Thread regarding Optum layoffs

How is everybody dealing with the total lack of job security?

My mental health has been suffering because it’s simply not sustainable to keep worrying and stressing every single day. That’s where we’ve been for over a year now, just not knowing from one day to the next if more cuts are coming. I’m having more and more trouble dealing with it, but leaving isn’t an option.

@a5 may I ask what legal advice you got? I'm 59, been with the company for 32 years. I'm just waiting for my turn. Things I've seen advise I should have an employment attorney look over my severance when my time is up.

The stress is real. To add injury to insult even high performers get knocked down with mangers being forced to lower objective performance scores. It was nice having time off for the holidays but the anxiety came back big time on Sunday. Some comments talk about why not just leave? Depending on area such as tech, the jobs have dried up in the market. If you are remote based and decently paid, it's not like you can just go out and replace that with very few jobs being posted that are getting 100s of qualified applicants. You are competing with folks laid off from big companies like Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. As bad as this company is I'd rather still be remote and get months of severance vs voluntarily taking a huge pay cut and go into an office everyday plus there's no guarantee that culture is actually better somewhere else.

@bg Problem with RSUs, is a) they vest over four years, b) it takes a full year before even the first batch of them vest, and c) who wants to trust any part of their income on the price of UHG's stock?

@at some examples?very curious on how some thing could compel you to stay on a sinking ship commanded by sui-idal captains.

We had two senior leaders say goodbye today. Took the first offer they could. Both clearly demotion moves.

Staying here feels so insanely risky that I would need like 6 figures in RSUs vesting this very year to even considering staying—and people with that amount aren’t posting here.

Same. I wish I could look for a new role but I am pregnant and not only would no one want to hire me right now but I also would most likely not get paid maternity leave with a new company

@a2 some people have other things that loom over staying here. Think outside your small box and realize there are a lot of reasons on why we can’t just leave.

I acknowledge the stress. Years ago I was with a firm that had a series of layoffs spanning two years. I was laid off on the 4th round, two years after the first layoff. As I had an idea my job was at risk, did the following. Updated resume, had medical exams, cut expenses to a minimum, improved my diet, lost some weight, contacted ex colleagues and friends to see what the market was like - heard their suggestions, paid off credit cards, sold a few items on Ebay, took legal advice which helped me double my severance pay. Apart from the death of my parents it was the most stressful time. It took awhile to find a new role and some sleepless nights but all turned out okay. Best wishes to you.

Why can’t you leave? Family benefits? Most jobs will offer it. No harm interviewing elsewhere to see what is available. You can always politely decline.
