Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

A Tough Day

I would like to say this is it but I am afraid today was the first of a rough year. Great employees were told today they are no longer needed while others who don’t appear to contribute anything were spared. When the great employees are gone and their mediocre peers remain I see a bleak future for the rest of us.

@de I joined in 1981 right out of college also. You may not be fine. Don't be complacent.

My organization lost approximately 5% but they were all volunteers.

Then they were told sorry, we laid off too many people and you have to work another 3 months.

They can’t wait to leave but what’s another 3 months pay?

@ak This is the truth. You can bust your a$$, be the best on the team, and it still won’t matter if your leader has poor leadership skills and only promotes their friends. Hard work means nothing in a system built on favoritism. The worst part isn’t just being overlooked — it’s watching someone take credit for your work and get promoted for it. That’s the reality.

I joined in 1984 out of college. This is a normal cycle. Please calm down. You will be fine.

And the master of the disaster is still behind the wheel and driving us to the edge of the cliff.

We made 4 bold predictions back in 2016-2017 about where we'd be by 2026. 1) We'd be driving around in 5G autonomous cars by now. 2) We'd be reaping the benefits of Time Warner as it was "a perfect match of two companies with complementary strengths." 3) We'd change the advertising game with Xandr. 4) We'd spend well over $100M for an "entertainment area for employees and all to revitalize our Dallas HQ." Not to mention we were still telling everyone DTV was a steal of an acquisition.

We were wrong on every single one of these. This company has been and continues to be lost. If you had a tough day yesterday and on other side in a couple of weeks, believe me, it's a blessing. For those of us still here, we're eff'd until we can find something else out there.

People talking about “dead weight” and “market-based culture” are miserable sacks. No one is giving you gold stickers for giving up your self preservation and sense of community with your fellow workers.

You have more in common with every person cut than anyone running the show. Wake up and realize you aren’t special.

In case you didn't notice, we have moved to a market-based culture. Your value is determined by your skills and contribution.

@OP I do feel bad, many of those people also felt like they made it through the last 20 or 50 "tough days" and were probably told they were special.

For those of you in management, you mean nothing to the leadership team. They won't talk or think about you after you are gone. There are better cultures out there. Start planning now, have a plan, be prepared. These layoffs will continue. The wireless market continues to not be in their favor.

T stands for temporary job, not a career.

This is why so many of us only do as minimal of work as we can possibly get away with without getting fired and take advantage of all the many ways to take paid days off.

The stankeyville video said parking would not be a problem. This and more to come is why.

I am still hanging on, as I suspect you were. I know my day will come too.

I maintain a large network of contacts and have made it a point especially to keep in touch with those I worked with here at T.

There is not a single one of them that is not glad they left (whether on their own or via surplus). Not one. So it’s my firm belief that you’re going to be fine. Best of luck to you.

I'm sorry to those of you laid off. Please look at the bright side - know it's hard right now. There isn't 1 former AT&T person that's unhappy about not being there. Most of us have landed elsewhere and wake up with a weird feeling of not being stressed or anxiety of having to drive in EVERY DAY to an office for Teams meetings.

Leverage your AT&T experience. Recruiters appreciate it. You know you're sh*t. Also don't hesitate in sharing with recruiters or in future interviews the bad culture, 5x 8-5 monitoring your COU pings all day, every day. Decks upon decks. 4 month projects blown up at last minute and everyone in room just realizing we wasted our lives and weekends. It's not normal. It's not industry standard.

Being laid off from there su-ks. I know personally. I came here simply to say you will be SO much better on the other side. You have no idea what that place has done to you. You will breathe easier in the days ahead.

5 executives split an $85m bonus pool, fire you, and you are expected to be loyal. Fu-k them and sabotage whatever you can on the way out - projects, data or workflow
