Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Company Is Freaking Out On H1B Fees

This amuses me. Meanwhile they have destroyed the careers of millions of people. But that’s ok.

Trump needs to put a tariff on offshoring.

A lot of the H1B contractors aren’t actually doing the work themselves. They send it back to India to be done overnight for even less money. With VPNs, it’s easy to make it look like the work is happening here. You can see the difference in quality. Projects that should take a few weeks end up dragging on for years. AT&T is losing so much money because of it, and management seems content just giving status updates while the real problems continue. It’s basically modern-day slave labor. Bloomberg is already digging into it, and others will too. The HIRE Act really needs to pass.

In this thread, people that think Keynesian economics, specialization and Just in Time inventory practices are anything more than protectionism for the rich.

"When the federal government itself can lay off American workers"

It is too bad the nuances of the situation escape you . . . you must bean ATT Lawyer. The federal government is laying off American workers, and not replacing them to gain efficiencies. ATT is laying off American workers and replacing them with overseas emplyees while being subsidized in many cases by American Tax Payers. So, Feck off!

“ Trump needs to put a tariff on offshoring.”

Yep, one million per head…& $2M for every single H-1B’er. If the greedy corporations try to move out of the country, $100m tariff.

This isn’t a socialist economy where CEOs prioritize employing large numbers of people. Unfortunately—or perhaps realistically—it’s a capitalist one. When the federal government itself can lay off American workers in the name of efficiency and cost reduction, why would you expect a company like ours not to consider where savings can be made? I personally know many scientists , researchers that were let go from the government.

The hypocrisy of life is this: when I search for contractors to fix my driveway, I look for the cheapest quote. Yet, in business, we dislike competitors who undercut us with lower prices. Then the question arises—if I were a business owner, how would I make money? While it may seem like just a $1,000 or $2,000 difference for drive way contractor, across the market it adds up to millions. And really, why be upset with the contractor who offers to work for less? He’s simply doing the same thing we all are—trying to build a life and feed his family through legal means this country offered.

@av they hire them in india to work for the ATT USA. Your replacements minus the H1b payment. They fire 5/6 people here and have one guy PM them. If you cant see that you must be the d-mb one.

@as then hire them in India. Pay them 1/4 of what H1B makes and keep them out of the country. Anything they don’t spend on out-bidding you on a home they send back to India instead of stoking the US economy. Are you d-mb?

I'm not sure this affects ATT entirely. I'm sure they bring in h1b, but whats to prevent them from just hiring under their India att entity or any other entity.

Mobility tech here. We’ve be upgrading Siads the last couple years, requiring scheduled work with a group called the MPC. Just yesterday the tech I worked with over teams told his manager told the group Brno Czech Republic technicians are smarter and that’s why the company is offshoring. Not due to cost. The pay the Brno folks is around $20-$23/hr.

I also learned that once this project is complete, there’s a new coast to coast initiative to upgrade once again to a faster Siad with 100gb throughout. And those units will be autoconfiged. Plug and play. Anyone can do the work. Even if they don’t speak English.

That’s another pain in the a-s. This entire Nokia to Ericsson project (project allagi) is all being worked by Mexicans and South Americans who can’t speak a lick of English and have ZERO experience. It’s a total nightmare.

@a3 None of which will incur a $100,000 fee as it's only applicable to new petitions.

I have been saying that it is imperative that you lobby your local senate leaders on a few things. One, 100,000 is not impactful because it is used as a business write off. Two, The new H1B fee needs to be applied to ALL applicants old and new. REMEMBER if this was about STEM applicants, telecoms and tech companies would not have to hide behind their third party contracting people that they do business with exclusively . Next, when talking about off shoring, remember these companies are replacing workers at a cost of five to one. So to make this a level playing field we need an external revenue service that would collect tax on these workers . The company needs to pay around 150,000 per worker abroad.

"Whats odd is that republicans used to be about free trade"

Republicans are about free trade. The tariffs that Trump has created has only been enforced against countries that have tariffed our products, with very few exceptions. To have free trade, both sides have to participate.

Tariffs is the new anti business, anti consumer buzzword.
Whats odd is that republicans used to be about free trade and now they’re just trying to keep prices up and consumer confidence down. And yes I’m an independent but former republican

Of course they’re freaking out.

I’m not sure about the other hubs out there but this is no exaggeration. Middletown NJ is full of H1B employees.

If I had to guess, I’d estimate approximately 70-80% of the employees at this office are H1B’s.
