Amazon's New Manager Dashboard Flags 'Low-Time Badgers' and 'Zero Badgers'

This question was asked a few times in this forum.

  • Yes, companies have started tracking "how long" instead of just "if" people badged in.
  • The sensors were there, but aggregation was not so common .. till now.

I'm at Hopkins & see a dude do this every day I sit in a certain area. He logs-in at 9ish, doesn't have the desk reserved, takes one meeting, & bolts no later than 10am. So... I don't feel bad for only staying till 1-2 & getting there at 7-8. It's not that I care what other people do but it's obvious that's what he's doing & is what others are saying isn't a thing. No, it's a real thing but I mind my business & just track my own days.

@qk it's actually going to happen. I'm not just posting stuff here to stir the pot.

I don't know how they'll be using it or what they're looking for or if it's even going to be announced that it's happening.

@cd Is this a real fact or you're speculating?

How many people really just swipe their badge and leave? I see a few leave after an hour or two but I could care less because I too struggle to find motivation at a filthy desk with no trash cans or wipes. I feel dirty after being there for 5 minutes! I had a booger smeared on one of the monitors and u expect me there all day. Its hostile! I wouldnt say a peep about anyone coming in staying an hour and leaving as I understand and can empathize. Im not sure others are the same though. I definately feel watched and tracked. Im in a large group of team members and im the only outsider. Its awkward and uncomfortable AF.

@ea Those aren't who I was referring to. I agree with you, we should be able to be flexible on when and how long we are in the office based on our job and needs. I'm referring to people who literally drive to the office, swipe their badge, then turn around and leave. I don't keep track of this, I don't care what others do. More of just an observation of what people are complaining about here.

@a2 working 9-5 isn't even possible on the West Coast. My meetings start as early as 7. And if I didn't start at home I'd still have to commute.

The bank can either allow flexible hours or start meetings after 9 local time. Not both.

@e4 most people i know aren't "trying to find a way around it". They're genuinely working the hours in the office that fit their role, responsibilities, and personal lives.

People's kids get sick and they have to leave early. People have appointments, or pets that need let out. Some folks have an hour plus commute. If you've got kid pickup and drop-off those times have to be taken into account. Those i know with kids don't get in until about 9 (or later because of life and weather) and they've gotta bolt anywhere between 2-3 to pick up. If there's a longer commute their time in-office will be super short and borderline pointless. People with dogs that need let out face the same conundrum.

It comes down to minding your own business, minding your own work, and letting your office colleagues do what fits their lives best. Yes, there are people who coffee badge. But the vast majority do their best to just comply and not make waves. In the end this isn't about collaboration it's about control.

If you're going to go to all the trouble to commute to an office, just stay and work. You're stressing yourself out more buy trying to find a way around it.

Hourly tracking is coming. It's just a fact.

I don't know anyone that knows how strict they'll be about it or if they'll even announce that it's happening. I don't care how long or often people are in the office. People being in person has no impact on me being able to do my job so the whole thing is trivial and ridiculous.

For a company that is so focused on getting rid of processes that take up time (I say this rather tongue in cheek) they sure are focused on creating as much micromanaging overhead for managers as possible. This will just be one more thing for management to deal with that takes up time that could be better spent actually working.

When people are unhappy they aren't innovative. If they want innovation and money making ideas they should probably focus on employee satisfaction and make policies that support them. But that makes way too much sense therefore it won't happen.

@a7 “work and you will be rewarded”. What? This is about RTO, not about working or not working. This is about location. But if you personally lack the discipline to work remotely, then perhaps YOU should be in an office. Leave everyone else out of it.

Kindly work 9-5 M-F as prescribed for over a century. Keep your head down and focus on your daily tasks before your duties are transferred to Pune or Bangalore. Why worry about trivial issues while earning your keep? A losing endeavour
