Has anyone been told they are getting a new title even if they haven't applied for anything or requested a change?

I wore two watches this week and got promoted to supervisor of the gym.
My new job title is: SVP - Dog 🐶 Walker.
@OP this happens alot. Sometimes your job changes, Sometimes not. Sometimes you get more money, Sometimes you don't. More often than not, people or departments get RIF'ed and its just you absorbing more work.
Yes, my job title was changed years ago without me changing jobs or work duties. The job grade didn't change. I had no say in it. As far as I could tell, it was a way to put us in a lower salary range.
Yes, they changed my job title last year for “alignment” purposes without telling me. And changed it to a Hybrid 1 job without telling me or even getting any input from me. My job duties did not change at all - just title and hybrid status. For no reason.
Saw this years ago - they were moving all of a certain job title to another department- would have put the manager below the required number of direct reports so they renamed people’s job titles to keep them. Probably has to do with the org structure - like maybe someone up the ladder needs a certain amount of managers to justify being a vp? I would ask about job description and pay scale for your new “faux” job - they are going to do whatever they want anyway but would be curious to see them hem and haw about their shenanigans to protect themselves.

@af you need to take the job description of Manager and compare it against the responsibilities that you have been assigned along with pay and formalize it and request a meeting with your manager and HR. If you don't do that - you sadly will get no where and be stuck sc--wed with a fake resume, fake recognition and cruddy pay.

I was given a vanity manager title even though I’m no where near one. I didn’t ask for it. I was told I was responsible for all these things and this is my new title. However no change in pay or update in Workday. The wording for this new role and title is at least 3 tiers above my current individual contributor title. I’m feeling this is a setup. And wondering the legality of this.
