Thinking about taking leave

And not sure whether I should file; does anybody have thoughts as to the pros and cons… especially with respect to whether one could lose his job.

@x0 really su-ks but guess there's no way around it. if WF is forcing managers to give a certain # of IM ratings and a manager must pick between someone who worked the whole time vs. someone who didn't, the manager really doesn't have a choice. yet another reason forced rankings are evil.

I had to take medical leave, no other choice. I came back to a bad review while I was out then laid off 2 months later. 20% have to get Inconsistently Meets or Not Meets ratings and if you aren’t working you are rated at the bottom.

@a4 amen. guess all the downvotes are from others who've taken leave when it wasn't truly necessary and don't like to think about how that sc--wed their colleagues. people can be so selfish.

@hk if OP has a choice, that means they can choose to keep working. they can be fired or displaced regardless of whether they go on leave just like anyone else. leave of absence can't be the reason for termination but almost any other reason would suffice.

OP, regarding potential for loss of job - going on leave can't be considered as a factor to select you for layoff, but it doesn't prevent layoff either. you can be laid off while on leave same as if you were not on leave.

Keep in mind that "toughing it out" - not taking leave when you have diminished capacity from your medical condition (mental or physical) -- will put your job at risk performance-wise.

@d3 the way I read the question was that the concern was over if you term. I don’t think they have the luxury but I they’re told to take it (by MD) and a concerned it might not be a good idea.

the fact that OP apparently has the luxury to debate pros and cons and can't decide shows that the reason behind the leave is likely bullsh-t. glad I don't work with him/her (at least i hope i don't!).

If youre in a senior role, presumably making gobs of money, yet you're too delicate to navigate the relatively soft world of corporate banking then God help you if you ever have to get a real job where actual work was expected from you literally every moment you were there. Enjoy your leave and good luck ever getting a job where your obvious fabulousness is recognized and you're fawned over so that you get the validation pathetic weaklings like yourself apparently need to earn a paycheck.

@a5 what a stupid comment.,, the company doesn’t know why you are taking leave! MetLife approves the claim and all WF knows is that you were approved for short term disability. NEVER disclose your health condition to anyone at the company.

@OP I will be filing next week. Will be requesting forms from MetLife tomorrow, have an appt with my Dr on Tuesday, and will be notifying my “leaders” right after that. Will report back in this forum how it goes. Oh, and to those who say “way to sc--w your co-workers”.. I’ve covered for them when they were on leave, and I didn’t hold a grudge. I knew it was temporary (up to two months in both cases). But at this point nothing will hold me back after the abuse of our leaders - unreasonable workload, ever changing expectations, direct taunting and intimidation. I cry at least once a week, and have panic attacks from work. And I am in a quite senior position. It took me a year to finally decide to consider a leave. You do what you gotta do.

Depends on the reason, like surgery, cancer, parenthood, etc. If it's because you are "stressed," then no.

In this environment, I feel like the company sees an opening to displace your role.
