Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

21 folks got laid off August 12th

Hey all, I was among the 21 last week. I am so sad. HR told us we were going to be supported during our 60 day job hunt but they were no where to be found. I'm certain none of us had a chance to find a new role at Target. My team is talented, respected, and qualified for a lot of the open roles yet none of us could land anything. We HUSTLED in the 60 days. I personally applied to 16 different internal roles my skills would have made sense for and I got one interview which was amazing but I got rejected. Same story with 4 others on my team. I am convinced we never had a chance and it pi---s me off they led us on. Stupid i know but I didn't apply externally at all because I wanted to stay so badly. Lesson learned. 18 years with the company and no thank yous or I'm sorry from leadership. It stings but now I know how it is. I was so naive having grown up there.

Really concerning that the severance is a lump sum and employees do not receive ongoing health insurance for those weeks. I’ve never seen that before. Is that for certain levels or all Target levels? Other companies will give you your full health insurance through the entire severance period as that’s the point of severance.

@vg Can you change your withholding before you receive it so that at least not so much is taken out in taxes?

@10r Just a reminder to folks over 40 who end up getting a severance agreement (usually with a bunch of waivers) and are told to review it and sign it on the spot or that they have 24 hours to do (so NOT true): federal law requires an employer to provide you with at least 21 days to consider the agreement before you sign it (in case you wanted to run it by a legal representative).

Is 50% still being taking out for anticipated taxes for those who receive lump sums?

@w5 oh I'm so sorry. You won't get any info until the last day. HR sets up a 10 min meeting and sends you the paperwork 5 min beforehand then asks if you have any questions lol. So stupid

@zj yea idk why it is. Probably some tax write off for them that way. No I don't get insurance at all. Have to pay out of pocket but part of the lump sum is $10,000 to help with the next few months of insurance thru cobra

@xn they don't pay out vacation in Minnesota for some reason. My L4 buddy had so much saved and she lost it all. She was such a rule follower too when we all didn't log our vacat hours...

@vg I’m surprised they give a lump sum, why not continue paying you as an employee for the 6 + years of service weeks. Do you receive health insurance during that 6+ week severance time too?

55 and older who lose their job should get their accrued vacation and be considered a retiree.

@OP got the same spiel (6 weeks + 1 week per year of service), but haven’t received anything in writing yet. I received my 60-day notice on July 15.

@px no I don't mind :) we all got 6 weeks plus 1 week per year of employment plus a little to help with health care costs. So $64k for me before the taxes. The problem is it's going to be given in a lump sum so it will be taxed heavily. Meaning it's not actually 23 weeks of pay and I can't get unemployment until the 23 weeks run out. I don't know how I'm gonna survive TBH.

Very sorry to hear you're going through this experience. Do you mind saying what your layoff package was?

Common knowledge is hiring managers already have someone picked picked before the internal posting ever goes up. Haven’t you noticed “new” HQ teams that just appear but were never posted, like the ADA team? Target is gearing up for a big shift from FC, because store teams do it quicker and cheaper. Many FC teams are way over staffed, and take up valuable real estate in buildings that could be better used supporting stores, so that’s the obvious next cost cutting measure, in fact, one building has already received their notices BEFORE peak season even hits. Best guess is early 2026, more will go.

It’s common knowledge that 99% of posted internal roles, by the time they post, hiring manager already has someone picked and ready to go once the required posting comes down. I’m hearing they are laying off entire buildings, many in fulfillment because stores are doing it quicker and cheaper. My advice, if much of your workload is shifting to stores or India, get out while the getting is good.

@ac hi! Some folks from the old PD&D in both hard lines and apparel (development side) and some operations folks who worked on Spark (PLM system)

There are more open roles in TII than Minneapolis. Unfortunately, nobody laid off has a chance to land another internal role. And it’s despicable that HR pretends like they do.
