Remote Return to Office Rumors

Have been hearing a consistent rumor this week and wanted to see what others have heard.

Allegedly the week of 4/12 there will be a notice sent to remote workers saying you have 30 days to decide whether you will relocate to Minneapolis. If you decide yes, you need to be back by July 1st, if you decide no, you lose your job.

Apparently this will impact merch (buyers) and planning? Potentially IM as well (which I doubt), but essentially members of the core roundtable.

Is this just a rumor or should I actually start preparing??? What are others hearing?

@391 did this actually happen or are you stressing about the possibility that it could? Was an announcement made?

@38s what do you mean? The main post mentioned this week 4/12 and a relocation of July 1 and that it could affect IM. Idk what’s going on but it’s frustrating feeling out of control of your own life. I have no problem going into office, but I live an across the country since I was hired and would need more the 60 days to upend my life. It’s like not even giving a fighting chance.

This is maddening. I don’t understand what’s happening.

Are they going to make us relocate if we’re Remote IM or what?? I can’t take being in this purgatory anymore and the longer it takes for them to tell us the closer this July 1 deadline gets.

RTO 2 days a week beginning in September is for current Flex-for-Your day employees. No updates on remote.

I find it absolutely amazing how people kick and scream about even a few days back at the office.

If you owned a buisness. Wouldn't you like to know who you are paying and how they spend their time while you are paying them.

Wake up people, the WFH gravy train is pulling into the station. If you need a car or daycare, probably tine to get it.

I do not feel sorry for anyone who gets laid off that has a chance to go to the office. God gave you legs prople, and employers don't pay you to stay home with your kids.

Enjoy!

If it’s SO important to have team members in the office collaborating together, why is 50% of our workforce in India? Are we going to make them move here too? No? Well then we clearly CAN collaborate with remote TMs and this whole thing is a farce.

This cannot be true as there are open roles that clearly have remote as an option

Also, just because you re-locate doesn't mean they won't lay you off in the near future...(while you're carrying a new mortgage/lease)

I wonder how long sourcing is safe for now that Bill F is gone.

You are needed back in the office for GTKY’s, Connects and potlucks. That is all.

You work for them. Work is called work for a reason. Fill up the tank and drive to work.

No more laundry and visiting at the bus stop on the company's dime.

Tee hee....the same people complained about rto 1 day a week. Losers

I’m remote in tech but I haven’t heard any of these rumors. Curious if anyone’s heard anything similar in tech.

If you need an OFFICIAL MEMO to tell you what’s happening, you’ve already MISSED THE PLOT.

Rumor or not, this is CLASSIC playbook — force relocation, shrink the herd, and let attrition do the dirty work. Saves them severance and accountability.

So YES — take it as writing on the wall. UPDATE your resume. START interviewing. QUIETLY EXIT on your own terms BEFORE they make the decision for you.

And let’s be honest about the “relocate to Minneapolis” part. You’re being asked to uproot your life, absorb the cost (financial and personal), and move to a market most people wouldn’t choose voluntarily — COLD in climate, COLDER in culture — just to prove loyalty to a company that hasn’t exactly shown it back.

All of this for WHAT? An org that KEEPS SHIFTING direction, BURNING through talent, and CALLING it “STRATEGY?”

If that trade-off makes sense to you, go for it. But for everyone else — THIS IS NOT an opportunity. It’s a SIGNAL!

MOVE ACCORDINGLY…

Even the remote HR people who work for different departments like Food and Essentials and live in California and Washington and just zoom it in and make phone calls all day?

@d9 THIS a million times! As someone who is no longer with TGT and opening myself to the market, I see a few appealing roles outside of MN (I am local to the state) but I am no longer as enthusiastic about relocating for a corporate role as I used to be in the past.

The market is janky, and will be for years to come; so what's to say I move for that "dream role" and then uproot myself, lose my 3.5% mortgage rate and my lovely home, and my family/friends/relationship (forcing said SO to have to pick up as well) and then get dropped in a few years? No thanks. Judging by how TGT has treated its loyal corporate TMs when they had to downsize, I am not willing to go through that in a new state. The ROI is not worth the effort.

If they’re making everyone move to Mpls does this mean they’re preparing to implement 5 day RTO? And if so, where are they going to put everyone?

@d9 They’re likely trying to get people to quit. Can’t afford the current staff but don’t want to do another round layoffs.

Personally, I would start to prepare. I don’t know what area you work in, but this mandate was already implemented in hardlines last summer/fall. The guidelines were more forgiving, but last summer merch and planning was told they had 2 months to decide if they were going to move or not and then 6 months on top of that to actually make the move. It wasn’t implemented for IM.

@ba Does it ever really make sense to force someone to upend their lives and move somewhere for jobs that were done remotely? What's to say there won't be more layoffs and now that person uprooted their family and are in a new state with a higher mortgage interest rate and no job?

@cq Was the "Target Benefits Center" always in Lewisville, TX? Maybe I've been asleep at the wheel but did receive a mailed envelope from there.

I highly doubt this impacts everyone. There are Roundel folks in NY and elsewhere. It would make zero sense to force them to move.
