Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Cant even figure out batteries

  • Barton Malow confirmed layoffs at the $3 billion GM and Samsung SDI battery cell plant in New Carlisle, Indiana, as construction enters a slower phase.
  • The company described the cuts as a normal part of the construction cycle and noted that affected workers may return once project activity increases.
  • The Indiana facility, part of GM’s goal to produce 1 million electric vehicles annually in North America, includes two large buildings valued at $875 million and $855 million.
  • Work paused as Samsung reviewed equipment design changes, though construction is still expected to finish by December 2027.
  • The slowdown reflects broader trends in manufacturing and clean-tech construction, with similar delays at Kore Power’s Arizona site and Intel’s Ohio One semiconductor project.

Mr T said he solved inflation .
I feel better now that I know that.
He also said I should go buy a tiny Toyota.
I guess GM isn't the apple of his eye.

So prices went up.

That may be good for the company if we don't price ourselves out of the market and lose sales.

But inflation is bad for consumers

This is what the AI says:

GM's average vehicle transaction prices (the actual amount buyers paid after incentives) increased by approximately 8.6% between November 2024 and November 2025.
Key Data Points
November 2024: $51,512
November 2025: $55,950 (estimated based on October 2025's $56,181 and observed month-over-month trends of -0.4% from October to November in prior years)
This change aligns with broader 2025 trends, where GM's prices rose due to strong demand for trucks and SUVs (e.g., full-size pickups averaging over $66,000), offset partially by declining EV sales and incentives. Industry-wide new-vehicle prices were up about 2-3% year-over-year in late 2025, but GM outperformed due to its premium mix.

@36r
GM sales for 2024: EBIT-adjusted of $14.9 billion
GM sales for 2025, third quarter alone: General Motors reported third-quarter 2025 revenue of $48.6 billion, net income attributable to stockholders of $1.3 billion, and EBIT-adjusted of $3.4 billion.

Estimated tariff cost for 2025: General Motors anticipates a total tariff impact of about $4 to $5 billion for 2025

MOST IMPORTANT: General Motors can apply for tariff offsets - THEY CAN WRITE THE TARIFFS OFF!

Do you think GM isn't affected by tariffs and higher prices throughout the economy?

Maybe that affects our costs? Our sales?

@337
What does any of that have to do with batteries or GM?

The prices of electricity, groceries, health care, and everything else has spiked in the last 10 months.

So much for standing in front of a table covered with groceries, such a old fashioned word, rotting in the sun and promising price cuts on day one.

With what fuel you gonna charge those dead batteries bud? It don't matter what their made from. maybe you gonna charge an ev fee for infrastructure development and lost fuel tax revenue? You genius though, you must have the MBA from the best skool.

Lithium EV batteries will be DOA very soon. Sodium batteries called Naxtra will be much cheaper, have superior performance in cold and hot climates and won't catch fire. They are in production now in China. This technology should give a great boost to EVs, but you will lose a lot of money trying to do anything lithium at this point.

  • General Motors is laying off around 1,750 workers and pausing EV battery production at plants in Ohio and Tennessee due to slower electric vehicle demand and changing regulations.
  • The Detroit-Hamtramck Factory Zero will cut one of its three shifts, while Ultium Cells (GM’s joint venture with LG) will suspend operations for six months.
  • GM’s Senior Vice President of Software and Services Engineering, David Richardson, has left the company amid a restructuring that moves software operations under product leadership.
  • CEO Mary Barra said near-term EV adoption will be lower than expected because of reduced incentives and regulatory changes, signaling a shift toward financial caution.
  • Despite the cutbacks, GM’s stock remains strong, suggesting investor approval of the company’s decision to slow EV expansion and focus on profitability before pursuing large-scale electrification again.
