Thread regarding USAA layoffs

rto is bad

rto is complete garbage. i've been forced back 4 days a week. in the past month, i've talked to 3 people total in the office and sat in conference rooms taking meetings where almost no one from the office showed up - they just took calls from their cube or a focus room or worked remote. the people i actually work with aren't in the office or even in my city. but my whole life got turned upside down for some stupid ego-driven rule.

i'm using more water, gas and energy - bad for the environment. my stress went up - bad for my mental health. and i had to buy a bunch of stuff to go back (lunch containers, work clothes, shoes, a laptop bag, etc.) so rto costs me money. this is after 5 years of almost no raises, barely any bonus and 5+ years without a promotion.

i feel stuck because the job market su-ks right now. but yeah, at least i still have a job and didn't get laid off. hoping things shift back to favor employees eventually, however long that takes.

If I could, I wish I could switch places with the employees who are whining about RTO. Instead, I am unemployed, been laid off after being loyal to USAA for over 23 years.
I keep applying on hopes they would take me back but I keep getting the automated rejection letter for any job that I post for, even the same job title that I was laid off from.
It's pathetic that I have to keep begging them for the opportunity to go back. I have looked elsewhere, but my experience has only been with USAA. I even have an MBA, but it doesn't mean sh't.

@r4 Typical raise in my area was 2-3% so before taxes that was under $100 a pay period. My rent increased by $200, storage by $50, insurance and cost of food increased - so really net of any raise is negative.

Want to know what is worse than RTO? Being unemployed, constantly competing with everyone else who is unemployed for jobs with less money and benefits, no health insurance and mounding debt because that small severance package ran out months ago and reality stood up front and center.

@OP RTO was never about improving team collaboration or productivity. It is a Human Resources strategy for natural attrition so employers wouldn’t have to pay out severance . In this job market, companies have the upper hand . It su-ks, but these are the games being played today. Remember this. One day when the job market gets better, the table will turn .

@1vx but before Covid 1/3 of non-member contact was already work from home (due to space).

@1vx
Of course USAA recruiters promised 100% permanent WFH and lied.
Of course USAA put in our employment agreements that we are WFH and lied.
Of course leadership up through SVP promised permanent WFH and said there’s no validity to any RTO rumors.

All lies. That’s what everyone is upset about. Who cares about pre or post Covid.

People always complaining this is how the world worked before COVID and no one batted an eye about cost of gas. Of course the world was going to go back to this.

@r4 maybe it’s the 100 non voluntary reorganization and layoffs. No but seriously in those 5 years I’ve I had 13 different bosses. It’s impossible to prove performance

If you’ve been there 5 years and hardly gotten any raises and bonuses I’m thinking maybe your performance is not up to par. No other reason that would happen when most people are getting raises and bonuses.

When we were at home, companies were profiting. Now we are in office they have to lay us off due to low productivity and loss of profits. Real estate and insurance is expensive- send us home and save money.

Agree on the recession part… seen how many homes are for sale and just sitting lately?

Play the long game. Job market is horrible right now. They want you to leave so they can refill with someone who’s been unemployed for a year and amenable to anything. If you want to get promoted, slap on a big smile and look like the RTO poster child. They are taking note of who is towing the party line and who is resisting.

OP, if you have gone 5 years of almost no raises, barely any bonus and 5+ years without a promotion, that is a good indication that it's time to leave. I know the job market is bad right now, but I hope you find something soon. As far as working remote, have you applied in house to a group that would let you work from home? Finding a good job that allows remote work will be difficult, especially given that the President of the US does not want remote workers in most positions, which can dictate how companies allow certain privileges.

Before Covid, we had some remote employees, but majority of employees were in the office. Now, some teams consist of more remote than in-person employees. I think that is the main problem. It is very unfair for in-person employee.

I think 2026 USAA is going full force with RTO enforcement, they know the job market is bad and will use this to their advantage.

I live just outside of San Marcos Tx, exactly 59.2 miles from the office, but because I’m under the 60 mile radius, I have to drive in, spending 90 minutes one way 4 days a week.

The interesting thing about this is … my team is all remote in different states!! Maine, Ohio, Minnesota, North Dakota & Hawaii. So I get to drive all that way, just to be on zoom calls.

My brother works for a company and 6 months after rto, all the owners / leaders looked around and were like “this is d-mb AF”. Sub-leased the building and gave all the employees a bonus. CRAZY idea.

Rto stinks.

Im ok with two days in, sure, ok.

But i dont talk to members.

I dont talk to people about outside of the typical hi how are you…

I only have one person on my team at the same office, and is also a hermit.

There are only a handfull of people on the same business line at my office…

Its absolutely common sense. Make it an option where people work…

Not my fault they made bad real estate decisions…

It’s going to be years before we see that wfh shift again, and my fear is that after they send home next time - it will be the last time - and within months 90% of our jobs will be automated away.

If the market ever gets better, we're going to see a huge pivot back to wfh as a perk. Eventually the tide will turn and wfh will become the default for non customer facing roles.

They're only doing this right now because the job market is so bad and they can get away with it. My personal theory is that we're actually in a recession right now, so if things ever get better we'll gain the upper hand again.

Just stay strong, keep grinding, and remember we're all gonna make it.
