Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Half my time goes to completely useless meetings

Why do managers feel the need to drone endlessly about the obvious? Best I can tell, maybe 10% is actually instructive, the other 90% is just a ritual to make them feel important. People have stopped asking genuine questions, it’s too risky. It'll just extend the agony, and the answers won't come anyway.

@19d You're supposed to be multi-tasking, didn't you get the memo?

True story: I (Systems Engineer) was tasked with an "action item" at an early morning meeting. Had solid meetings ALL DAY. During the last meeting of the day I was asked for the status of my earlier assigned task. I literally had zero none-meeting time to actually get work done.

Not an isolated incident. It's epidemic.

Just think how many more useless meetings we'll need when another 20% of staff are cut.

Sometimes I don't like to wear pa-ties and then drop my phone on the floor .. my manager sneaks a peek and has the biggest hard on .. he has to cover it up when he walks back to his office. It's so cute ..

You're in an enviable and fortunate position if it's only half the day. Most engineers I know are in meetings over half the day every day.

@OP I get where you're going with this, but having sat through literally hundreds of meetings where the same question is asked, debated, re-asked, re-debated, and then done again a third time for who-tf-knows reason, this is just how incompetent the bottom-of-the-barrel scrapings that this management team considers value hires are.

Admittedly, some of my offshore peers are qualified and capable of doing the job, but so many can't handle a simple policy requirement without being hand-held for a month or more. The extreme level of hand-holding required for this international workforce (Yes, some domestic employees are also this incapable) is evidence of just how little intelligence the "leaders" think is required to run this sheetshow.

But, it is not something you should be concerned with. I've been told by multiple people, at multiple levels, that it's now what you can make it look like you're doing rather than what you're actually doing. You need to appear busy, and then streamlining that busywork, to appear to be a good employee to the middle-management that is now in place to judge your efficiency and work ethic. It's all about appearance, not ability.

Managers have to d-mb down the meetings to the lowest common denominator, just like compliance.

@OP
Half my time goes to reading completely useless layoff posts about things unrelated to layoffs.
Maybe ponder that next time you feel the urg to post random sh-t.
