Thread regarding Emerson Electric Co. layoffs

It's VERP season again!

So, it's time to force people to use up vacation again, and for older workers to get asked to retire early again. At least for Rosemount in the Twin Cities, I don't know how many people of VERP age are even left after last year.

Projects are hot-hot-hot, but they'll have to be done with 20% fewer hours and no experienced people. All because they will never sacrifice a penny of stockholder profits to actually support their people

If we got rid of people for poor performance we wouldn’t have to offer verps… maybe get a better HR group… they can’t recruit worth a darn either. #Talent management!!

@164

1) it’s voluntary
2) management has discretion to not offer it to people who qualify
3) if they take it, the role must remain unfilled for a year meaning it really can’t be a critical position
4) if a senior person does want it but are deemed critical, they become bullet proof. As long as they do the absolute minimum they are protected by the threat of ageism related lawsuits.

This isn’t what you’re describing? You’re suggesting they’re firing the old people to clean up the books but that’s not what I see.

@134 VERPs target older employees with seniority because they have much higher salaries than entry level college grads, more medical issues pushing cost of benefits upwards, longest vacation accruals, etc... It's nice to give people a choice, and I'm sure it saves the company a ton of money at first, since they were the most expensive employees after all. At the same time it's usually very bad, since you're losing the most valuable, experienced people on your team in one fell swoop. The bean counters don't care about that, they just want em gone.

Is this not an improvement over history where the playbook was just hire and fire indiscriminately? Seems like they are trying to avoid involuntary RIF to me. What am I missing?

What projects are hot hot hot? You mean internal projects like npd or customer projects?
