PA Public-Private Partnership or Let's Play Political Hardball?

If you had to guess how the negotiations went down, you might imagine something like this: BNY Mellon strolling into town with the confidence of a Fortune 500 landlord who knows exactly how many jobs, leases, and tax dollars the state would prefer not to lose. And poor Gov. Shapiro — or rather, the Office of the Governor — suddenly finding itself in the awkward position of “strategically cooperating” while BNY casually unrolls a PowerPoint titled “Incentives We Expect, In the Spirit of Partnership.”

Because let’s be honest:
BNY Mellon didn’t walk into that meeting hoping for tax credits.
They walked in expecting them — the way a cat expects you to move when it wants your chair.
So yes, it’s entirely plausible that the conversation included a polite but unmistakable corporate nudge along the lines of:

“It would be a shame if all these jobs… relocated themselves to Pune.”

And voilà — multi‑year tax credits, workforce incentives, and a fresh coat of paint for Ross Street magically appear.

BNY wasn’t negotiating.
They were playing political hardball with home‑field advantage, a loaded bench, and the scoreboard operator already on their payroll.

In the end, the state got to announce “investment in local jobs,” BNY got its incentives, and everyone pretended this was a balanced partnership rather than a masterclass in corporate leverage. RV's smile says it all! #Life@BNY

Removing The CEO (OCT 26, 2020)

In almost thirty five years of working on boards, the hardest decisions I have had to make involve removing the CEO. It is an important decision and one that must be made from time to time. I am not a fan of removing the CEO until and unless it is abundantly clear that it must be done.

But when the CEO has failed to manage numerous important challenges, when the senior leadership team has been a revolving door, when the CEO has messed up important relationships with customers, employees, and other important stakeholders, when the organization has become toxic as a result of the CEO’s abrasive personality, then the choice is abundantly clear and must be made.

It is an even harder decision to make when you don’t have an obvious replacement, or when you are not 100% confident that the obvious replacement will be an improvement over the current CEO.

But those are not reasons to wait. You must act and replace the failed CEO with whomever is the best option in that moment and work with the new CEO to address the challenges facing the company, many a result of the failed CEO’s poor leadership.

Waiting is never the right answer. Failing to act is never the right answer. You must remove a failing CEO.

This from the same guy who bright Kmart #life is ridiculously awesome 🙄. Oh and don’t forgot the boxes upon boxes of associate t-shirts that sat in the back with all those “fun” sayings. Should be little wonder that pier one is failing!

Tell an area manager that a project will take a month to implement. Area manager says you have 3 days. Rest of engineering and local manager confirm it'll take a month. Area manager goes to exec VP who then says 3 days or implementers will be sacked.

[...]

In the post-mortum, VP asks why it failed.
