The Elephant in the room

The death of an industry, waste, mis-management ? However the "elephant" ……..(technology) lays waste to decades of blind process. Wheels and cogs in a seemingly self autonomous load, that writhes and slinks its way along. Until now.

Bright young minds, minds we groomed. have found themselves at the door of technological change. The winds are bringing in the newest, latest ,shiniest, fastest. most seamlessly connected network offerings we have ever seen !!! Forever changing the face of ALL media as we know it.

Our company was not in step with the lightning fast change....and found itself no longer on that leading edge...……..SO the merge , and the complete transformation of ideology. and to the only logical answer to the demise...? The build and exploitation of "Transport" !!….

Common dsl customers ? copper infrastructure? for what? The electricity spent keeping many of the remotes running in all probability ,is barely paid back by customer revenue? face it...….another great American entity will fall as we know it

We are not alone. AT&T, Frontier, Verizon everyone's feeling the presence of the "elephant" in the room technology is forging ahead and forever changing the landscape of media and delivery. So then it would seem logical, if your in a position that directly supports transport, or in a Gpon area, your probably in the game a inning or two yet.....

Why would anyone want to ride it out when there are jobs out there that are dramatically better? The only ones that are staying are those who lack confidence, intelligence, or both, to get hired at a better place. Other utilities pay more, are more secure and still offer pensions, go get yourself some before you are too old and reminisce about how we told you so.

Who cares if technology is evolving. Don’t leave your job because of it. Do what’s best for yourself, ride it out if you have too.

"The only thing left is retirement funds." And that's why the Monday after I got my package, I started the ball rolling on moving my old Sprint/Embarq pension to an independent IRA. Not leaving $24K sitting there for those at the top of this totem pole.

Y'all don't have a clue. Share holders are keeping the lights on for ya. The company doesn't have anything else left to tap into to pay your salaries.

Banks and institutional investors have shrugged their shoulders at CTL.

The only thing left is retirement funds. Look for the PBGT to take over your retirement and cut it 60% like they cut Calpers, ITA, GM and RR.

Trying to understand how people from Level 3 can talk c-ap when they were on the verge of Bankruptcy and used the merger to tap the cash flow of The RBOC to "Transform" into this so called leading edge company.

Evolution is necessary for a business no argument there in the technology sector, you inherited the Fiber, the Customer base and are now claiming the rewards as if you made them yourself. 100 years of OLD SCHOOL hard work made things what they are so you can skim the cream now, your throwing out the milk, the cow and the grass that fed it.

Have to ask once this transistion is done how many of you will be around once it is once aging sold and or merged with another company. It will happen since the leadership has already shown it's management style is one of skimming and then discarding and not creating.

You seem sort of uptight? Must be the stress of driving around closing tickets, waiting to see if your sold or outsourced? Hey Great for you ! if you slide through and keep milking it your golden. More to life .

technology has only one constant -change. a matter of time . enjoy

Well enjoy your unemployment. Me the mindless, brainless cogs will keep working and cashing paychecks following the dirty contractors around fixing and installing service to all the non existent customers. But you and your big bad brain can stay on here and wallow in your self loathing. Have fun ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Totally agree with last post. Walk into any CO and look at the dslam and see how many ports are lit. Customers fleeing in record numbers. New MAX areas the guys will be amazed at how fast people leave because of 5 to 6 week wait times for service. Them, wait till you get attacked by pisssed customers along the road, at cross boxes or COs. Don't even try to eat lunch.

The plant has been left go so long they couldn't fix it if they wanted...and they don't want to. No other company with a brain will come in and buy this turd. Shoot, they couldn't even GIVE it away.

Yes, guys gone of their own means or the heres a box you got 10 minutes and Uber will be here treatment are all better off. Everyone here looking for a job or won't be surprised when Uber time comes around to them. It's a shame.

If the upper managment had ever been smart enough to listen to us and our input in the field years ago, we wouldn't be a turd circling the bowl right now. But, nobody ever wanted to hear what the guys on the front lines had to say, or didn't believe us.

Your right I have plenty of time on my hands. I also have a brain and know how to use it. Don't know where your working at ? But I can ASSURE you copper in my area is on the block so to speak. Yes there are still customers, but the vast majority of our customers are being fed anemic DSL services at best ! 10 megs and under....hell we have a large percentage of customers that are 8 and under...our competitor? 100 meg minimum...

Our plant is beyond trashed.....We have Dslams that were 75-100%, many with multiple systems, now that have maybe 25 workers in a single system … Like I said not everyone is at risk....you go on and ignore the direction the company is headed . And use that primadonna brain of yours to try and convince yourself that our archaic offerings will wither the storm. Those of us who can look clearly at the current situation and see it for what it is will do so accordingly.

Largely the difference between smart phone users and flip phone users ….sure a lot of you clung to flip phone....and some of you still do....good for you ...when they replace all the copper people with contractors it will be on the wall for all to see or.....or....MAYBE y'all get lucky and have them sell you off like sprint did? whatever Typewriter repairmen never thought their jobs would go away either......That comfy cozy kumbya (its been that way for the last 20 years ) hope that works out for you ..you mention 20 years its obvious your close to your expiration date? I'd think twice about another 20 in the bank

Its all good !! The pressure they have and continue to exact on you ? It is only beginning ! enjoy the summer , enjoy the lack of bodies to fill holes, and then enjoy running around behind the contractors they try and use to fill the holes. Me Ill enjoy the new found time on my hands and ill spend it where it means something with Family and friends ….enjoy the load...it needs mindless cogs like you.

First of all you have way too much f---ing time on your hands. Secondly I work in both copper and Gpon areas and it’s all about placement some dslams are at 20% and will probably never even hit 50% penetration, however some dslams are at 100% capacity and have been augmented 3-4 times and held orders are waiting for service. The same applies to Gpon. Everyone says it’s all about speed yet the majority of Gpon installed is for 40-100 meg, not the gig it’s more about marketing (price) and the factors of the location and what the competition has another area. They’ve been saying copper was dead from the early 2000’s yet here we are In almost 2020 and it’s still in use. As long as companies build systems that increase bandwidth that run over the twisted pair then the work will continue. So miss us with this doom and gloom poetry.

As far as the rest of it ? There are too many cogs missing in the machine, and the load has been "sputtering" accordingly. it staggers and zips. And at times seems to "normalize" ...However it continues to capitulate into the abyss......those on the other side of the techno-revolution ? DSL pots copper monkey's? our game is nearing its last inning
