Thread regarding Barnes & Noble Inc. layoffs

Barnes & Noble pushing people into quitting

The conditions are miserable and it's like they want people to quit. I'd be really shocked if there aren't major layoffs after the holidays. I was told that if some stores don't make their marks, they'll close this year.

There is no "like" about it, there is no other explanation for their treatment of employees. They need to get rid of more people and layoffs are expensive. The more they can get rid of through other means (quitting,), the better for B&N.

I'm determined to stick it out just so they don't save severance money on me. Otherwise, I'd be out of here in a second.

They want to make people quit so they don't have to pay unemployment benefits.

My advice for anyone who is still working at Barnes. Stay on unless you find another job. If you get fed up and quit, you won't be eligible for unemployment benefits, or they will be harder to get).

A manager who just quit here said there will be no severance for the next group who gets laid off.

How much longer can this sinking ship hang on?

I heard there will be no severance for future layoffs. One of the guys I used to work with (who is still at Barnes) said so. He's been there 25 years, so he's really going to get screwed when he gets laid off.

They have to provide you with unemployment benefits. They have no choice in that. But severance is not mandated by law.

How can you be sure about no severance? Isn't that illegal?

Yeah, sorry to tell you this buddy, but you can stick around all you want, help out thru the holidays, BUT then you will get the NO severance boot. The only people who might get severance is your store manager and those at the corporate level.......NOTHING for who are "sticking around". SORRY

Layoffs aren't always expensive. Yes, they paid out to the last layoffs with severance, but there is NO law or stipulation that they have to give severance. In fact, that was sited in the legalese of the papers we had to sign and have notarized. They DO NOT HAVE to give severance.
