Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

More qualifications, less chance of promotion

the odds are that if you're qualified and knowledgeable in your role, the odds of you being promoted are not good. I'm not sure if it's because they know they have too many chiefs and not enough native Americans and promoting them reduces productivity, or that they don't want intelligent people in those roles. Not sure which, maybe both. Safe to say that if you're driven, smart and use critical thinking, you will not go far at HON.

In all honesty @Ohs25K0-1dfj, it seems more to me that current management at Honeywell does not want to promote anybody who they feel could threaten their jobs down the line. Better management would not have to fear such scenario, but with what we have...

I wish you could click "Like" on these posts. The first guy who posted has it dead nuts on. If you're a HNY Mgr they wouldn't be able to find your pulse. That's how you can actually sleep at night.

-gbl -- right. Unless you are curiously lacking in empathy, can falsify employee reviews and take actual delight in dishing out pain ... you aren't HON management material. Oh, and you can look yourself in the mirror every day ...

Managers now appear to be more like HR people. Dont get too involved in the process, issues or technology, to avoid getting any blame when things dont go as expected. Just delegate everything and monitor your people. If something is late or there are complaints, blame the worker. All issues are people issues now, dont have to understand how things work. And if things are going ok, then must be easy and possible area to cut.

I appreciate that promotion is about the only way to get more money without leaving the company, but given the often nasty or stupid things that managers are ordered to do, why look for that promotion?

The fact that there are seven, or more, levels of management above the worker bees speaks volumes. And yes, incompetent managers are threatened by those who are smarter, more qualified and much more productive than they are. By suppressing those threats, they not only feel more secure, but they look like geniuses by denying salary increases associated with promotions and productivity.

I'm the OP and I totally agree with you. They want yes men and yes women in those roles. They want people who won't question the terrible decisions they make and would possibly be in a position to take their job away. The solution is to only promote "non threatening" employees. This way they can continue to run the business into the ground unabated.
