yes, a little impersonal, but also appeared to be very business like. what do you want, someone to hug this person, a sorry you're fired letter, a going away party... what... job is a job, just that and nothing more... when will these folks grow up and accept that even at 20 years seniority, you're at the root, a fking worker bee, and that's it...

The book "Swim with the Sharks without Being Eaten Alive" details MH strategy. There is a short chapter on a manager who cuts costs, works people overtime with out pay and runs production with out down time for preventative maintenance. This guy increases productivity like crazy and costs drop. The fantastic results are noted, he gets promoted and moves up out of the old job. The next guy steps in and people quit and the machines are broken, costs go up and productivity drops. Management says "Wow we have never seen such a clear case of leadership."

So basically you can burn through the life blood of a company, equipment and people and then jump ship before you have to reap the downside of all the short cuts you take. Look at what happened to HP, now look at will happen to Oracle.

Absolutely appalling, an employee 20 + years treated like that, unbelievable. I work in WWOPS and I'm just waiting for the tap on the shoulder, in September I hear, although no one can confirm it that's the rumour.

That's fairly polite compared to other layoffs I've seen. Some companies just send a fedex and a return box for you to send back laptop, badge, etc. as the only notice. No human interaction or even an "I'm sorry...". Were you expecting a George Clooney "Up in the Air" kind of termination? Layoffs are tough and nobody has ever said they had a good one, unless maybe C-Level executives which walk away with multi-million dollar golden parachute packages. If that manager had to do several in the same morning, they all probably had to show up at 8am and the manager finally got to that person around 11am. The number of years in a company doesn't guarantee anything, especially in the tech industry.
