I'm in hw storage sales and this is depressing. They haven't outright cancelled ZFS yet and we can still sell it, but the writing is on the wall. All of our intel comes from our contacts in engineering and this site. Sales leadership won't tell us sh--. I liked selling it, it did a decent enough job, but it clearly wasn't profitable enough. I think we sold maybe $250 million a year. Considering PSTG is doing over $700 million a year and still bleeding cash, it doesn't surprise me that Oracle is pulling the plug.
FS1 getting cancelled a few weeks ago was actually a good thing for us. It was miserable to sell and second sales were near impossible. I only personally sold to two customers and one got a data corruption issue. We could only pull off $40 million a year for the product. Knowing that it's gonna be the storage backbone of cloud is terrifying.
All I have left now is ZDLRA, which is the hardest of the three to sell because of its price and limited market. I'm guessing it'll get killed off shortly as well.
I keep hearing about Oracle, in Bozeman, and keep thinking, "Whaaaa?" And then I remembered, reporter-punching Congresscritter! Ohhhh yeah!
Sorry to hear about the layoffss, but what a weird world we all live in.
To LE, MH, and SC everybody working at oracle is just cattle, thus no need for more than a perfunctory "you're being terminated" meeting. The faster the better, next ....
You are asked to be brief in your interactions when giving the RIF notification. You can't answer any questions legally about benefits. You're just there to deliver the news and with large scale rifs you have to give many of these notifications. It's never a good day for anyone in the process.
A quick and easy firing is good for employee and employer.the decision cannot be reversed, and instead of drama, it's preferred that it's quick. Otherwise anything being said leads to a potential lawsuit with words being misconstrued.
The only thing that would make the process better is by giving employees at least 1 month notice, and chance to find alternate jobs at Oracle. The only issue is that O risks damage from a disgruntled employee in terms of s/w destruction, IP stolen. So, there is not a lot that can be done. And, the idea is that employees are given a package, which is paid salary for a couple of months, and they can always apply for jobs in O like an external candidate. The question to ask is : can you propose an alternate win win process ? I can't.
In all of my decades of working in tech, I have never seen layoffs handled as poorly as they were on August 3.
20+ year employee neighbor of mine, this is how it went: manager walks into their office at 11:00, after employee was asked to be in by 8:00 and has been watching people packing boxes all morning. Sum total of conversation: "I'm sorry you are being laid off. Please clean out your office and leave your badge, AmEx and laptop with me by 1:00PM, because I am out this afternoon. You will get a FedEx package at your home with an 800 number you can call with questions. Bye."
That is it, after over 20 years.
What a forked up company.
How hard was Bozeman hit? I know of <10 people laid off on the 3rd.
Which groups in FMW? In RWS?
Folks who got an email from their manager to meet today ... can anyone tell us how did it do please ?
Was it about getting Rifed ? Package /no package ? Any reasons given for why ?
FMW Dev zapped as well today.
Most other companies announce the layoff plans. Oracle does it the sneaky way - to not trigger WARN law (which requires 2 months notice to be given if over 50 folks are fired), prevent difficult questions from press, and most importantly confuse the customers enough about what they can and cannot support, so that customer keeps buying stuff for which they will never receive support. Smart and sneaky, but it's forgetting that it's product are no longer the best, and it's good will is going downhill. How about a different strategy - announce layoffs, give every one 2 months to look , tell customers what they can and cannot support , modify SLA expectations (which is mostly not promised unless a customer pays though nose to have one Oracle employee capability to VPN into their box , and called "Premier Platinum support") , and start having a start-up mentality for cleanly competing with other agile companies, and relying on less hoax and less propaganda ? Hmm. Seems far fetched by MHs ethical standard, and SC doesn't care as she got a position she never ever deserved or was capable of, and she knows that, so she is happy to wait for her retirement while socializing with top honchos.
Mark and Safra are safe, but JF is gone, so saving some big dollars
Several developers laid off in Bozeman office today. Some old, some new employees. Not sure how many total in service cloud but heard about 10% expected in US in Miranda's org. Do not know what criteria was used either. If Oracle is trying to cut the cost why not lay off Mark and Safra or some of those VPs making millions of $ and not contributing much?
I"ve been laid off before. I know it's horrible. But for those who got cut today...I know you're feeling worried; but here's the thing...somehow the situation resolves itself. The right job, a better one, will be in your life. It's gonna happen because you have a lot of valuable experience and knowledge.
People who got notices .. can you update us on what he manager told you / package / what is the reason explained / how many of your colleagues got hit ?
Got notice from my manager this morning too. A big shock!
I heard that the total head count leaving SCA today (most of them ZFSSA) was slightly shy of the limit with which a company must provide a 60 day grace period (by the state law)...
the entire software development in Irvine, CA (92614) got laid off..
OD has never been safe..
good luck to all..
I have heard that the severance is 4 weeks + 1 week for each year of service with a maximum of 26 weeks of severance.
Anyon or team could be next. Can anyone say what type of severance they are offering? Based on years employed?
There was no warning... just like that I am out of a job... And no, not 8 week severance. That would have been nice.
What about other product lines? For example, the Taleo product. What a gawd awful ATS. I've never seen any improvements to the UI on the Oracle Taleo career site. Maybe it's different for the customer versions. But it seems this line is just stagnant. Any layoffs at the Taleo side? Is it even profitable?
Based from info I see, this is my conclusion. Oracle bets everything on the cloud business.
FS1 is the hardware to use for it. ( internal to provide cloud services to customers). ZFSSA, Solaris and Sparc are dead. Skeleton groups will be kept to fulfil customer support obligations, that's it.
Big company mergers never work out, having been in a couple of them, it always seems to end with culling the product(s) from the company being taken over ( Sun in this case) and as result, in the end , people being made redundant on a massive scale.
Very said to see so much intelligent capital being thrown way.
are they giving 2 months salary , like it was done during January layoffs?
Guessing that either the tech is dead, or there will be a big push to move it to Linux, which will probably be as yuge a success as Exadata SL
Anyone from storage dev or Sustaining affected ? I am safe, but I WFH, so not sure about different Geo's.
"Cloud services Dev", what do they do? Who do they report to?
I was let go from OsVC customer support team in Bozeman, MT after 14 months of employment and having moved 1400 miles to take the job...
Wonder how the selection process of people was done. Was each manager given a number?
Is WW operation affected ?
OsVC US locations seems company wide... location independent.
what location is this at?
10℅ of cloud services Dev.
ZFS is now under Edward Screven and Mike Workman. No longer under Ofer.
All of ZFSSA was moved under ES several weeks ago. Marketing, development, test across the world are being riffed with reductions of at least 50%. Read what you will into the data.
Huge layoffs where I am at... gone... No concern for the individuals at all.... Long term people with seniority gone.... Others with less time not gone. No sense of it at all… just random it seems. Major knowledge dump just now…. Lots of high quality respected people devastated for the bottom line :(
Yes I am done, they have informed me today, it has been 6 years in development.
yep - am history!
Is ZFSSA under ES ?
Who in particular under ES ?
