Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

RIF 2024, Its Happening!!!!

The second wave of the RIF for anthem has started! 20% of the labor force to be cut by the first week of March! All meetings will start this month. People leaders will have the choice of selecting who is to go. The last time it was by seniority to avoid lawsuits. This time the people leaders will select the employees. At the same time the restructuring of teams and titles will commence. Some will get severance packages others will not. Others will receive offers for other roles. In addition two more RIF's are scheduled for 2024. These last two will be market specific. It has nothing to do with performance and all to do with margins. It has been determined that the company productivity and performance increases after each RIF. Anthem has mastered managing by fear! Happy 2024 and praying that you are not affected and those that are get at least a package. Will continue to update!

For those laid off, which department?

My sister is being laid off as I type this. They've lied about pay, added responsibilities, removed resources, and she was still a top performer. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by a for profit insurance company.

Hi All, It's quiet here.. everyone ok ? Maybe either really quiet or it didn't happen ? Maybe too soon in Jan . I came on here to see what was going on. See all the posts. We must remain strong.. we are here for each other. At least I am for you. Keep true to yourselves, don't get caught up with all this. You can't avoid it. Be the best you can. Keep your head up, Make sure you take sick time if you have it separated in your buckets. That $$ goes in Elevance pocket. Update workday with your personal email information. Take any classes you can, have your resumes ready and updated. Take care of yourselves and your peeps in your dept and at the office.. Share ideas that may help improve your area. Upon my departure , I wrote Gail a letter telling her how tedious things are. How we have to go to so many screens or systems to get information that should be at our fingertips, or how the data in systems is bad and we're compromising Hipaa. No accountability, the list went on and on.. in detail.. blessings to you all

It's really happening and people started losing their jobs yesterday. The names heard so far are coming out of Operations and Call Center. Feel bad for all those impacted as I was RIF'd a year ago. No matter how much you hope to get that severance, it's still an extremely tough and emotional day for those getting the news.

So....is this just another rumor or is something really happening? Normally when layoffs happen these boards blow up right away on Thursdays.

I know people who received a partially achieved on their last eval and then RIFd in October and they ARE eligible for severance but NOT eligible for rehire.

It’s still not clear if many people have received last minute meeting invites throughout this week for tomorrow, which suggests the layoffs will be small scale. Perhaps, some small percentage will be laid off now, some let go after performance reviews and appraisal cycle (potentially for poor performance, without severance?). Irrespective, good luck to all and hope the impact is very minimal.

The company will do whatever it wants! You have no obligation to this company, and the company has no obligation to you. You should be looking for a better opportunity rather than wasting time on this board.

@1uys+1quqlVHp. It was by seniority as in people with more seniority - and higher pay grade- were more likely to be let go. So counter-intuitive I guess.

Lies. The last one was NOT BY SENIORITY! love how you post like you're a Manager and you know what you're talking about. On my team people with 20 plus years rif'd. People with 3 still there.

It's really sad when you think about all of the money and time and resorces put into rebranding the company, and it's clearly at the expense of people. And yet we're suposed to feel proud and happy about it??? What difference does it make what the name of the company is if people can't feed there families?

@1ixx+1quqlVHp i don't think people think the RIF is fake news, but rather some of the other garbage spewed, like some get severance some don't (which would open the company up for lawsuits) and who / how the selection of RIF targets is made, because clearly that has already been debunked.

My advice if you get RIFed. Take what you can get and move on with your life. This is just another job, you will have many more.

@1abg+1quqlVHp. Correct -- no is 'entitled' to severance unless it was negotiated in an employment contract at time of hire. The purpose is solely to buy an employee's silence and reduce lawsuits after the termination.

@1jay+1quqlVHp: You think HR won't let age discrimination happen? I am a people leader who was coached by HR on to how to terminate a 60 year old in a way to lawsuit proof the termination. They moved to eliminate the job title of that individual -- explaining that doing this would make it very difficult for the person to fight the RIF on the basis of age. Hard, cold, reality: HR is not on the side of the employees, ever.

Layoffs have started, I have first hand knowledge of people being notified. And let's remember, severance is not a requirement. It is a "privilege". No company is required to give a severance package.

@1apj+1quqlVHp. During the October 2023 earnings call John Gallina explicitly told investors that 'resource optimization' will be ongoing throughout 2024. So anyone going around saying that another RIF is 'fake news' is either in personal denial, or is sowing seeds of doubt for others, or else doesn't understand the euphemisms used in the Q4 earnings call.

@1jay+1quqlVHp. It is very well known that age discrimination is notoriously hard to prove in court. The fact that it is hard to prove doesn't negate it's existence. Just talk to any of the 50 and 60 year old former employees who were neither ready for retirement nor prepared to abruptly be forced back into the job market last quarter. Here is the irony of age discrimination: no one is young forever. So anyone in denial on whether this has or will happened -- beware because you will see for yourself soon enough. Our days may be long but the years are short.

You cannot target people over 50 for a RIF. HR would never allow it, and neither would legal. There are multiple layers of review and approval for every single employee selected for reduction.

Many people comment on this topic who have never been a people leader going through the process.

There is simply no way the company could get away with paying no severance (there were employees who were RIF'd in 2023 who had 6 months tenure who received severance) and it is silly to say they will cut 20% of the workforce.

RIF are scheduled for this thursday, as well as some restructuring! Invites to go out tomorrow. Two more RIF's are scheduled for NOV 2024.( Subject to change). Lastly, efficiencies are the reason for the RIF. 2025 will be more aggresive because of the AI push by upper management. Pray to God that we are not affected. Severance will be given based on time serve! Anything else is fake news!!!!

Hourly vs salary at Hellevance really doesn’t matter since full-time workers are paid at 40 hour per week anyway. In fact, I would rather be an hourly worker because I am guaranteed time and a half if I work a minute over 40 hours.

@1mwb+1quqlVHp. What is meant by this assumption of 'hourly employee' ? It reads like an insult. Have our corporate overlords trained you to see hourly employees as ... less intelligent? ....more expendable? You have been so well-indoctrinated by the dark side. Our corporate overlords would be so proud of you -- a real paragon of leadership.

@1mwb+1quqlVHp. LOL! It isn't just woke socialists who see that what is going on is truly disgusting. People who dedicated years -- or decades of their lives -- to a company only to be kicked to the curb, all because of the mistakes of people making $10-20 million (or more) each year.

@1mwb+1quqlVHp. "Just following the boss's instructions" yep yep yep. Lot of people managers telling themselves that right now ... Selling their souls to help the corporate overlords make private plane money --- in the hopes of getting a few measly table scraps for themselves. Whatever you tell yourself so you can sleep at night is your own business. And yes you are right...as soon as I can I am out of here. I want to work for a more ethical employer.... that is what will help me sleep at night.

These statements are outlandish. Some of this MAY be accurate but some are ridiculous. They can’t get away with NOT offering severance pay to everyone who is Rifd unless there is a rare documented reason why eligibility is not met. I’ve never heard of this in the 20 years I’ve been employed here.

Seniority had nothing to do with the last RIFs. Our team had new hires yet some seasoned people were cut.

Can’t wait to come back to this post Thursday and see if these people posting how this is fake news feel. Putting it here now. Watch. Whole Health and Health Equity at the plans will be targeted. Quality will be targeted and realigned to corporate. All clinical will move to Carelon. Operations will be restructured and report to plan presidents and cuts will be made at some plans. Layoffs will happen Thursday.

What a joke. Just remember people, anyone can post here and can post anything they want. Just like everything on the internet....take it with a "grain of salt".
20% of Elevance health would be a crazy number and have a huge impact on the company.
