Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

This is the first I'm hearing that layoffs were done in August 2023, were those not announced?

No of course they weren't announced. I didn't know until they sent that email on Tuesday because this round of layoffs were leaked. They just didn't think they would get caught out there. Next week is those people's last days working. They timed it so as they are exiting payroll this round of people will notified. Same will happen in November and December.

If they had reported the layoffs to the EDD regulators like they are supposed to then they would have been on the Warn Notice and we would have known but alas shady begets shady and they didn't. Not even sure how they are even able to do that.

Sarah is just clown , puppet. She just wormed her way there, and now is playing survival to keep her stock until they best, she is not there to make and impact or make Centene, she doesn't lead, she doesn't understand the intricacies of the business, she just shouldn't be there, she has let Drew do whatever he wants because she doesn't understand the numbers either, so that being said, they are looking at the company as numbers and P&l lines, they don't understand that when you lay off people, the service to the members is worse, was bad already, and down the road, you lose membership and ratings go down.

For all of Centene’s questionable behavior, London has little incentive to change it. Centene’s total shareholder return in the past 12 months is more than 30 percent, compared with a more than 11 percent negative return of the S&P 500. Centene’s earnings are forecast to grow by more than 20 percent per year. Wall Street loves the company.

Crime supposedly doesn’t pay but skating close to the line without being forced to admit wrongdoing is a very profitable corporate pursuit. Sarah London seems well suited to lead Centene, an endorsement she shouldn’t be proud of.

Well what do you all expect when a corrupt company agrees to pay out over $800 million dollars over the last couple of years to 14 states to settle Medicaid overcharges. They gotta trim somewhere to save the hide of the executives.

That Sarah is just a puppet, she sold her soul to Drew and Burwick, the same people who wanted her head, instead of standing firm with Jim or Brent, the people who actually care about building and making things better, not this salvage barbarian that only care about their big a-s bonus, the crazy things is that while in the short term the stock buybacks and the layoff might make a dent in earnings, long term this company is going to be sh-t, unable to operate, and had be sold at rock bottom prices in pieces, nothing good with this goons in charge

Responding to: Top 5 Most Highly Compensated COOs (according to base salary and total compensation):

Dirk C. McMahon, President & COO, UnitedHealth Group Inc., $1,200,000
John Quinlan Doyle, Group President, COO & Vice Chair, Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc., $1,200,000
Jeffrey Joy Hurd, COO, Equitable Holdings Inc., $898,765
James Allan Williamson, EVP, COO & Head of Reinsurance, Everest Group Ltd., $801,923
James Elmer Murray, EVP, COO, Centene Corp., $723,887

Jim Murray was a guy that tried to fix many of the things that were wrong in Centene by investing in IT, Consolidating process, and empowering corp Quality. What they did to him? Seems like Drew the M- i-d-g-e-t and Sarah the poet the data liquifyer gang up against him, Sarah is just a clown btw, so she has been siding with Drew that all he believes is in taking the business to the bare bones with the expectations that it will be profitable, instead of making strategic, long term investment that would position Centene well to dominate the market as Jim wanted, Drew is just trying to squeeze the little juice left and later come back with a sale strategy of the business where they will get millions as they did with Just the classic corporate thieves that don't care about members, healthcare or anything. Just there for himself.

They 100% know who is being let go. I don't buy it for a second when the PLs say they don't. Sarah said in the meeting they have been discussing this with PLs ALL YEAR. So all of them are lying in one space or another. My PLs also denied the layoffs in Nov and Dec even after Drew said it in the meeting. Are these people for real?

Personally I don’t believe the people leaders when they say they don’t know. So you’re telling me random people will be called next week and then the people leaders will be updated? I think they know they’re just not allowed to say anything. Just doesn’t make sense. The employees people leader has to know.

I remember working at Centene on a Medicaid contract and use to stress to my manager the importance of those Medicaid Renewals, but I was told that was not the Centene way and I needed to fall in line.

My heart goes out to the ones that will and have been impacted

To your reply to my post:

Nope, it's truly a mixed bag of who is impacted and who is not, so that's why I'm struggling to make sense as to what was used in the decision process. I highly doubt that they just pulled names out of a hat, but that's the best comparison I can use to describe my personal experience between employees that will stay and go.

To those downvoting and bragging on your great experiences, show some empathy and be grateful for your great experiences. It’s sickening to see so called employees not show compassion or support. If you don’t care about your fellow coworkers why are you here reading? You should be ashamed. I see why this place is in turmoil. Evil vs good and no solution just bashing people for venting. You can have the exact same job title and role as someone else and have vastly different employment experiences based up market requirements and people leaders. Consider yourself fortunate that you’ve landed in a sweet spot, bc sh-t ain’t sweet across the board for MANY.

Here I sit on a beautiful Saturday afternoon worrying about work on Monday and if i will be 1 of the 3%. I can't sleep, eat, my nerves are literally sh0t! i think I've lost nearly 7 pounds from stressing out since Tuesday or whatever day the email got sent....... September marks 6 years that I've been with this company. I survived 3 previous layoffs && keep wondering "has my time run out", should i start looking for another job, how will my bills get paid????. Well my fellow CenTeam members or whatever THE POET calls us, I wish everyone the absolute best, i truly wish it didn't have to come down to this. I know better days are ahead and we should keep the faith however we're human and these emotions are real!

For those saying its only 3%, reading and comprehension is important. This layoff forum mentioned the August layoff and future ones, not to mention the backlash from that PR dance and pony show Town Hall. Who will have morale to fix quality after this fiasco? New employeds(they will need training) Are those leaders that can fix this place? Tell us how they’re fixing it so the so called 97% are at ease? Please explain

Supervisors and managers of areas impacted did not have a say about who would be let go. We are just as lost as those that report to us as to who made decisions and what resources were used to determine who would be dismissed. We’re also being hushed in silence with legal scripts being thrown at us. The question of what was used to determine who would be let go will forever burn in my head, because those who were picked are not alike in performance whatsoever, so I’m struggling to make sense of it.

I'm ashamed of our CEO for not taking personal ownership in "quality" improvement issues and passing blame onto low-level departments.

Zero support is provided for forced standardizations that grunt people leaders already know won’t work. We have meaningful process resolution ideas, but do we have a voice? No, instead, we are made to dish out “another” horribly thought out and inefficient work process to our employees that we know makes absolutely no sense that will ultimately impact our providers and members.

Congratulations to those who forced the execution of these poorly thought-out departmental implementations to “improve quality.” You get to keep your job while my staff lose theirs for you not doing yours.

Every time I hear someone (Kool-Aid drinkers) say “CenTEAM oneTEAM” in a meeting or town hall, my ears bleed. It’s an absolute joke to employees and people leaders who can see what is truly going on and really want to make a difference in healthcare. The people who toss around the phrase “CenTEAM oneTEAM” appear to be the same individuals who say, “reach out to your health plan for assistance” (aka not my job) with no support or direction. It’s hilariously disgusting.

Centene, you are not capable of helping outside (members) if you’re incapable of helping yourself (employees) first.

This is a place where once small companies with good values, membership, and ideas come to die.

COI would be pointless if you’re getting laid off. Not to say it wasn’t automatically sent to someone this week who will be laid off. I would be more worried if I should’ve received it and didn’t. But I don’t think anything’s been entered into a system for it to know not to send it to certain ppl yet.

I received my Conflict of Interest form but I also received it about the same time last year. Is this a sign of a lay off.

The new employment agreement with Chief Financial Officer Andrew “Drew” Asher is a base salary of $1.025 million with a cash incentive bonus of $125% of that salary, according to Monday's disclosure. He'll also be eligible for annual equity awards, including $6 million in 2022

Cash incentives????? How and why? Annual equity awards? What the fu-k does that even mean? How are the executive being given MILLIONS in bonuses and “awards” when they company had to pay off employees because of financial downfalls?????

EIG- what is the purpose? Have you looked at your org charts? EIG been meeting for how long? Waste of time and money. Realize that WE are all ONE. The knowledge is at the bottom and wealth is at the top, thats all this is. If we’re all equal SHOW us in salary and the org chars otherwise save your budgets.

Sorry for anyone going through this. Imagine how the 3000 felt in February 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, when they (and I was one of them) were older, but not quite old enough to retire. I was my sole income. Thankfully a recruiter found me on LinkedIn and I've had a job with comparable pay since then. I was in the middle of training a class when they called me into a zoom meeting. I was stunned as I'd been there for almost a decade, stood up many of their health plans and worked a horrid amount of extra hours. Don't be surprised at anything they do. Have your resume updated and be prepared to move on.

Fun fact- Centene's CEO is Sarah London, appointed in Mar 2022, has a tenure of 1.5 years. total yearly compensation is $13.25M, comprised of 10.3% salary and 89.7% bonuses, including company stock and options. directly owns 0.1% of the company's shares, worth $38.46M
Why is she allotted a BONUS when the company is suffering?

It explains the EIG workshops they were conducting. I attended the first one last week - not because I don't know how to write a resume or attend an interview but because I thought it would be beneficial. Then we got the "so sorry we got caught out there because it was leaked to the media that we are preparing to fire y'all with no notice or respect or regard for you as human beings" email and I canceled on the others. It was done under the guise of caring about the employees when it was just to make themselves look better. Guess they were part of the wonderful "displacement services" they kept toting on about.

I am not going to apply for an internal position - because...

#1 Centene showed its true colors tenfold and are not worthy of the majority of the employees they have

#2 Its a direct conflict with my personal moral compass. I do not share this companies moral and ethical views that its ok to sh-t on your workers to please your stockholders/investors or your personal coffers

#3 The option to apply internally means they want your skillset but will start you at the bottom of the pay scale so they don't have to pay you what you are currently making

Nah ....this company is a complete dumpster fire on the cusp of imploding

Nothing is certain at this point- including that it's just 2,000 or that December 8th is for sure the last working day for this round of layoffs.

My mental health is cr-p right now as is that of the coworkers I communicate with on a daily basis. Even our PL is scared she's about to lose her job. Annnnd crickets from The Powers That Be.

IF they care about their employees and we're "all family" as Sarah The Poet said in the town hall (ba-f) then they should've had the decency to move up the inevitable instead of making us wait an entire week. I know they're watching this. My PL acknowledged she's learned more here than what the company has told her.

Corporate greed and disconnect from reality at its best. I guess that's what happens when you make in 1 hour what your lowest paid employee makes in a year. I'd love to see Sarah The Poet survive a month on $17 an hour.

I feel like our required production is reasonable. I sincerely do not mean this to sound the wrong way. I just seriously am surprised.

Reasonable IF you don’t have a boss showing favoritism with 3 overworked while 10 brown nose to do nothing and get promoted and exceeding for being the boss friend. There are real problems here. We live in a world where people want “likes” even on the job. Wake up and stick together, these people scared, hurting, living from check to check could be you one day if CHANGE doesn’t happen.

Post ID: @4wfb+1oNUjeJa

I’m sure people wouldn’t be this upset over jobs they didn’t like. You love your job and exceeding-great. The bigger picture is complaints of company culture, favoritism, mismanaging budgets. Yes yes- layoffs are common. If you have a good boss 👍🏻. However, as you can see the disconnect across the org. You’re complaining about people complaining but if things don’t change at the leadership level, nothing will improve. Just swapping of employees with same leaders. You think people want to see this company fail bc they’re evil employees? No, they’re pist off and want change so this can be a “great place to work “. There are member’s providers and vendors depending on this place to succeed. Some people commenting need to drive throughout California and look at reality. People are homeless, get out your clueless bubbles and stand together. This could be you next year if change doesn’t happen!!!

Now the way the layoffs are being done is another story. I agree it’s cr-ppy. At least in the past we have been told up front that layoffs were coming. This was not even going to be public had the leak happened. I really feel for everyone this is affecting and wish the best for everyone that is affected.
