Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

Can someone explain the logic of the layoffs? The amount affected seems more than 3%, considering August. So what is being told to employees that were told they are safe? I mean, workload will increase so whats the plan here. Rumored future layoffs? Who will be doing all the remaining work? Btw im just as stressed don’t know if I’m safe or what’s considered safe,so I’m dreading the next few days.

Just as worried of our solid employees resigning than the layoffs at this point. Centene has a lot of great talent. Any hope of retaining them over the next year is pretty much gone as they can find work elsewhere quite easily. Many of the brilliant minds I currently work with are already applying elsewhere. Expect quality to go down, which is ironic if you tuned in to the townhall last week. Officially concerned about the future of this company as should shareholders. Morale and trust at all time low here in Missouri

So they’re doing layoffs by states? I don’t hear any mention of California? Maybe they’ll be one of the last?

@6dac+1oNUjeJa I mean no disrespect but how do you know you've been saved from the layoffs? There is still 3 more days of this!

Ohio was told Tuesday is their day, if nothing by Wednesday you are safe. In ohio that is. True? Who knows anymore, tomorrow will be telling.

I was one of the ones laid off today. I’m also 8 months pregnant. I’m so hurt. The time I would be using to bond with my brand new baby will also be used in searching for a new job. I can’t afford to be out of a job for a while.

Why not go on strike for the week. That’ll push it past the 60 days. They have to tell us something or London can run this ish alone. We need to renegotiate. You offer a mystery severance that I can’t know about until AFTER I’m gone!? And my silence!? Tuh

Enrollment department for Medicaid and Medicare was hit hard today. 13 of my coworker were let go and there are more that were let go that I don’t know about. We had a meeting today with our Director and we were told that all the effect employees were already notify and that those of us that were in this meeting our job were save. Someone asked the director if they were more laid off coming and we were told that from our end we were done with the laid off. I personally think that is is not true. Our famous CEO made it perfectly clear during the townhall meeting on Friday that 2024 was going to be a tuff year. So for the of us who supposedly still have a job, don’t feel relax because we could be part of the next round that coming next year. To those who were let go I hope that they give you guy a good Severance package and you get on your feet soon. To Centene senior leadership all of you are full of sh!t and save the culture bS for someone else. 2 extra holiday that you put in for next year is your way to try and make people forget. But is to late ya already show your true color during friday townhall laughing and making joke knowing that you were about to laid off 2000 people and leaving 68,000 of your employees worrying if they were part of that 2000 to be let go.

On severance - my manager said I would not get to view the Severance agreement until after my last day.

Maybe someone axed in August would be able to share the severance details that were offered to them?

You should get your severance details the day you are notified of termination.

When more than one employee is being terminated at the same time, the time period to review and sign must be at least 45 days. The additional 7 days to reconsider and revoke the agreement also applies.

The 45-day consideration period for the severance agreement runs from the date of the employer’s final offer, and the 7-day revocation period cannot be changed or waived by either party for any reason. After signing the severance agreement, you can be paid in a taxable lump sum or in smaller sums over time. Ultimately, how long it takes to get severance pay depends on the agreement you strike with your employer.

The lucky ones (at this point) will know in 3 days. I don't wish anyone to lose their livelihood for any reason but I'd rather know than stress for another 8 weeks. Everyone else will still be waiting everyday for their named to be pulled from the hat come November & December.

@7hzh+1oNUjeJa Ironically, Centene tells its laid-off employees that they are welcome to apply to any open position. Laying people off in fourth quarter (notice how this always happens after Oct 1?) boosts their stock by around 5% and gives them a boost in revenue, and they get to write off all this severance, it's very good for them financially. Then they hire back a bunch of people as contractors in the months after.

For the love of God just tell us if we are laid off or if we have a job! I am so damn tired of stressing waiting! It’s making me physically I’ll. I am a claims analyst of 3 years. I have an interview for a claims liaison position with Centene tomorrow. Have claims liaisons been laid off? If so then why the he-l are they having internal interviews for that position

My heart goes out to everyone here. I have been trying really hard to keep myself in check and prepared for whatever may come. If I know nothing else, I do know that I did not come this far to only come this far. I have put my heart and soul into every single aspect of my career here, and it is shattering to know now that I am nothing but a number to these people.

I have learned that those are the people being let go, the ones who actually care about the member's needs, the ones who go above and beyond to make things happen, the ones who take the ever- changing decisions and processes thrown at us, who work countless hours on a salary or low hourly pay, who put the needs of this company above their own or that of their families. It is devastating to realize that good QUALITY employees are being notified.

Whether you have been notified or not, take advantage of the free linkedIn learning offered here. Get certifications that will boost your skill set. I say this because the job market does not look like sunshine and rainbows right now. You can take these next 8 weeks (give or take) and learn all that you can. If you are interested in a different path /position, they offer all sorts of courses, it is not limited to health insurance. I know it may seem silly at the time of reading this, but I have a very analytical way of thinking (sometimes it is overk-ll) but it is what it is, and I plan to fully take advantage of this before my last day (whenever that is presented to me, or I succeed in a better direction).

@6ktb+1oNUjeJa Agreed. I wish I could tell my team they are okay, instead, I'm telling them to update their resumes and start applying for other jobs. With more layoffs coming in November and December, no one is safe. I have no idea if I am safe or my team. When I asked if we were safe, my people leader told me "layoffs are enterprise wide."

I’m a Director at one of the health plans. Have heard nothing from my PL and nothing from my Medical Director. The silence is deafening. I’ve heard from nearly all of the members on our team of 45 that they’re concerned for their jobs. I have nothing to tell them. I have no piece of mind for myself. Silence is not leadership. Leaders confront problems and speculation with truth.

This seems to be the only place that has people speaking out about this. Why aren't there any other platforms covering this? This is a travesty.

Other platforms want you to register so they can track you. People know this and they keep quiet. Here, anyone from anywhere can post, when stressed out, people prefer that… I am not aware of any other place on the web that allows anon posting, so this site is puzzling. The entire Silicon Valley operates on the principle of a registered user, and layoffs.com does not fit that mold. I guess anon works for many in this situation

@6fos+1oNUjeJa Centene lost all VA related contracts. $72 billion dollars losing TriCare and HNFS. They were warned to get into compliance in 2020 and refused. They are still refusing to get into compliance with government laws and more states will sue and more contracts will be lost.

The state plan that I work was on the list of states that have been fined. I was totally unaware of the fine (I've been with Centene 16 months.) We are a small, close-knit team and as far as I know, all 15 of us are still employed.
