Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

This is bs. just addressed the finance team ( scheduled 5 minute meeting) smh
Update your resume folks. They are very mum on this. They know another round of layoffs coming and not saying anything. "They can't make any promises" yeah right. Way to show employees you apricate them.

I find it amazing how they will pull someone from processing commercial insurance claims to process Medicaid claims and refuse to train them in Medicaid and expect things to be done correctly. And they wonder why they are being sued left and right - partly because of their greed, partly for not investing in training their employees correctly, partly because they expect employees to do multiple jobs because they keep letting people go. If they think they are getting hit hard with costs, and interest penalties now....man they are about to crash and burn

“Workers from Blue Cross Blue Shield Michigan stood together Monday outside their offices in downtown Lansing. Similar to the strike against the Big Three automakers, Charmaine Walker says members want better pay and benefits for all. She says a big issue is Blue Cross’s use of call centers outside of the country.

“I don’t think it’s fair for the customers to call into customer service and get someone over in the Philippines. Customers are frustrated,” said Walker.”

I have a migraine from the stress of not knowing if I'm about to lose my job. Even if I'm safe this round, I'm OUT. I cannot stay with a company that treats its employees this way. The only reason we know about this is because one brave individual saw that they had no intention of telling us, so only those impacted would be blind-sided, and blew the whistle.

I agree. The work doesn’t end here. Stay angry. There’s no hope for those of us who have been let go, but I smell an uprising for sure. There’s strikes everywhere. After we’re cut that check it’s time to air some people out.

For those that felt “targeted “, please don’t allow that favoritism to continue. There are too many employees complaining about bullying harassment and retaliation at this company across the organization. This is why this layoff is occurring, too many people in positions worried about the wrong thing (personal feelings) this is a business. After your silent phase (severance silence or whatever they calling it) come back and say what department. Please don’t allow these people to control another person based on their feelings and favoritism. This needs to stop.

Thank you to the person that leaked this information and forcing the executives to be transparent. Well pretend to be and show their true face. This entire situation is disturbing , to “layoff” over 2000 individuals but yet posting on LinkedIn about a hiring job fair. Please make that make sense. No real explanation considering::
At the tail end of last year, Centene sold off
Magellan Rx to Prime Therapeutics for $1.5 billion.
The agreement included a number of Magellan Rx business segments, including specialty dr-g management and full-service specialty pharmacies; a state government division serving 28 states and Washington, D.C.; and a pharmacy benefit manager serving about 1.7 million members.
This followed an announcement that Centene was selling Magellan Specialty Health to Evolent Health for about $750 million in aggregate proceeds, including potential earnout. To be apart of this organization WAS amazing at one point, now all I feel is anxiety and heartbreak. To see a CEO’s annual income amounts to a mega millions payout, while the employees have to wonder if they will be able to buy bread. Out is the expectation of the future for Centene? To have your former employees now be members of your Medicaid programs?

I am one of those people too. I have met production since day 1 on the job, quality, PFP bonus every quarter (until they decided that we were no longer worthy of them and upped our production goals), never audited - and I am not the only one. Lots of good employees that perform equally. I am outspoken so I am more than certain I will be on the chopping block at some point here. I don't need to be prompted though to say what's on my mind and I said so in a meeting last week about the layoffs. Mostly it was defending the company and trying to placate with "it's just business".

It means that you are not safe from being laid off. The only thing they made clear since the leak is that they had no intentions of letting anyone know about the layoffs and they still have no intentions of being transparent even after being caught out there. I find it amazing how PL are telling their teams they are "safe" while simultaneously declaring they had no idea - uh huh but they somehow know your safe right. No they are just trying to minimize and get people to go back to work. I am sure in the little amount of time since Tuesday they see production slipping.

I’ve always aired on the side of “outspoken”. Never unprofessional in my delivery, but I’ve definitely received “keep your thoughts to yourself” conversations from my people leaders. I’m never going to lie about how I feel when prompted. I can’t help but feel a little weird I’m the only one on my team who was let go. I’ve vocalized how I’ve felt bullied and cornered even though I’m meeting/exceeding expectations.

Just weird. Feeling so dehumanized by this whole situation.

“@6dac+1oNUjeJa I mean no disrespect but how do you know you've been saved from the layoffs? There is still 3 more days of this!”

Our area completed layoffs yesterday. When it was done our director had a meeting with everyone that wasn’t affected and let them know it was over and there were no more planned for our department, at this time.

Not sure what that means for all the other times Drew Asher talked about though.

Has anyone ever see that movie where all the workers are locked in the building and have to kll each other in order to "win" while the higher ups watch via cameras.... although technically we aren't klling each other this feels like the same concept. We're scrambling to survive something we know very little about.
I feel like a little mouse in their sick maze of traps...I know for sure they are aware of this post and are definitely reading the comments. Day 2 is upon us, best of luck to all.

Has anyone from PA Health and Wellness been effected? Some of my colleagues and I are wondering if we will be effected. We working in member services in customer service. A lot of changes in our dept has been happening the last few weeks especially. Our PLs are being extra quiet and not telling us anything either. They said we would know this week and that they would let us know, but still nothing.

Day 2. I’m just glad people have a place to lash out and communicate with others experiencing the same thing. I can’t imagine having to hold this in. It’s a lose lose, those left to pick up the pieces and those laid off.

Question: Has anyone in Part B prior auth been let go?

Response: yes, it looks like they are going team by team. Almost an entire team was notified yesterday of a lay off. I can only assume another team will be notified today and each day.

Great way of wording our department btw! I don’t think anyone is safe in any position, but just my opinion here.

“Half my Health Net team, along with our PL, were let go today.”

So sorry to hear that. I work in Prior Auth and I know the avalanche is coming soon. Wish us loosing so many counties during the Medical redetermination, it was almost inevitable. I know this is corporate America but there has to be a better way of doing this. It just seems too cruel and inhumane.

Sorry to any/all affected. Thank you all for speaking out.

We must speak out. It’s the only way we will ever create change.

“First They Came” by Pastor Martin Niemöller

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

I am one of the 30-50% of my team that was laid off today by my director (my people leader was in attendance as well, but no HR staff were on the call). It's VERY coincidental that my director's friends and the known "favorites" have all been spared from the layoff (up until this point), so I am finding it REALLY hard to believe that director-level employees didn't know details about the layoff beforehand and didn't hand pick who they were feeding to the wolves. Hasta la vista "family", enjoy your team of su-k-ups!!
