Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

@7gcv+1oNUjeJa "Wondering how much leverage people leaders have with layoffs over their direct supervisees? My people leader did not know who was staying and who was going before he was told yesterday."

I'm a PL and we aren't told anything. We have absolutely no leverage, no say, nada. In previous layoffs I know my Director did have say and they chose to ditch two people they just personally didn't like instead of getting rid of dead weight on the team.

They dont have a leg to stand on. Its called at will employment.

Unless you are licensed in your state laws and state jurisdictions please don’t discourage others from pursing legal counsel.

Can this be done remotely or do they want local?

Ha! Good luck with that. No employer has to tell you anything. In most states its at will employment so they can get rid of you whenever.

I have consulted an attorney. I will be filing a discrimination and wrongful termination suit against them, as they need to be accountable and disclose how they chose the individuals that would be terminated versus the ones they allowed to remain....just FYI no comments needed, I have my reasons and they have been validated by someone knowledgeable in this area.

OT because they fall behind. SO they will pay OT with the money they claim to not have to pay the employees that they are laying off right? OMFG the incompetency is astounding"

they'll just keep hiring lower wage contract or outsourced companies to do the work, it's already happening in my department

I'm so burnt out from this job. I'm constantly too exhausted to look for a new job. My work load has doubled since I started here,
but not the pay. It's a vicious cycle and I'm running out of gas.

Waiting to hear if I'm safe or am on the chopping block has me on the verge of a mental breakdown. I wish they would just tell us so I can breathe again.

“So no PL stepped up to stop the panic? It just goes on each day waiting on the layoff notice? Just let the whole company panic and job search?“
No. I m thinking they do not know what to say because they do not know much either. Communication is bad coming from above. It s all one big sh*t show.

"Yes, my team got the same thing yesterday, and we were told that we were not being laid off. Hope the same for you!"

Thank you. That gives us a bit of hope. (emphasis on a bit) Our PL doesn't like us and these layoffs are "dealer's choice," whoever the PL doesn't like gets the boot.

PS For those asking why PLs aren't speaking up, it's because we don't know anything. I know several Directors and Sr Directors who can't even give any solace to their teams because they don't know anything either. It seems that only VP and up know who is being let go, so it's not necessarily that your PL isn't telling you; it's that they have nothing to tell you. We all found out about this on a PL call earlier last week when someone posted the article about the leak anonymously in chat, then Sarah sent out the email. Centene never meant for anyone to know about this.

I can tell you that not one person has said anything at all in my department - not the directors, managers, or supervisors - ZERO people.

So no PL stepped up to stop the panic? It just goes on each day waiting on the layoff notice? Just let the whole company panic and job search?

Does anyone know if HR has been impacted? Or any ideas as to when we would find out if we will be? I’m not trusting anyone who says we don’t need to worry. Everyone is quiet. Trust no one.

All they had to do is advise who wasn’t affected this time around. Have you all checked the job listings, depending on your salary and bills, I would think you would need a good start on job searching during the holidays. I don’t blame who leaked it. The blame is that this should’ve done all in one day. Now people are waiting day after day asking. If their department is affected. This is awful.

No matter how it is justified this is what karma looks like - whether you believe in karma or not is up to you. But the end result will remain the same every time. This kind of shady behavior can only go on for so long before it backfires in their face. Forces at work here to bring the immoral behavior into the light for all to see.

But TBH finding out early did no one any good other than leave 97% of people who were safe filling panicky, so I dislike the whole situation altogether but I kind of see why they don’t make an announcement because it puts sheer panic throughout the whole organization. I would’ve rather it not have got leaked. Because now I’ll always be wondering if an email or message is going to pop up over the next several months if they decide to do another layoff, but it doesn’t get leaked because now I know that they don’t tell you in advance and even though I’d rather not know in advance, I don’t like knowing now that it could happen at any point and I wouldn’t see it coming from a business point of view I don’t think it is so terrible that they don’t make a big announcement and this is why

I have a migraine from the stress of not knowing if I'm about to lose my job. Even if I'm safe this round, I'm OUT. I cannot stay with a company that treats its employees this way. The only reason we know about this is because one brave individual saw that they had no intention of telling us, so only those impacted would be blind-sided, and blew the whistle.

It is DISGUSTING that this company is letting go of their seasoned employees to "save money"!! We earned those annual increases and now you punish us for our dedication. Make it make sense!! Let go of the dedicated employees who earned merit raises based on their great performance...to keep new employees ?? That's how you are going to increase the ratings of member care?? Blow smoke somewhere else...this company will not make STAR ratings next year, it will go down, and that I will stake my severance check on!

Yep because trusting god will pay the bills. Thoughts and prayers help pay the rent? Fu-k off with that.
