Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

September Layoffs

Something big is coming up, all the staff VPs are tensed and doesn’t make sense in town Hall meetings.

Do people in leadership posistions in here have any updates ?

Culo
noun,plural cu·los [koo-laws]. Spanish Slang. the buttocks.

Enough said 😁

regarding the person who said 'every team will be impacted' (I hate that we can't respond directly here, or that I've not figured out how to do so), it looks like Thursday my team is going to lose an entire arm, and one that is important, which includes leadership and high value employees. I can guarantee the Big Wig involved was not cool with this decision, one that was almost certainly made by people above [them] in a battle [they] lost.

This is definitely one of the worst RIFs I've seen here in my history, and I've been through quite a few.

what is GBD?

Post ID: @4fym+1oCCYtTZ

Every team will be impacted by the RIF. Some teams have a 20% reduction target and will let them all go on Thursday while other teams will eliminate that 20% between Thursday and the end of the year. Don't think any team, GBD or CSBD, are exempt from the RIF and believe most GBD teams have a 20% target and CSBD has a 10% target. Heard they are also bringing in additional HR staff due to the volume of people being laid off. Directors and above will probably be let go immediately while others will have to work a 30 day notice. Also with the required 7x7 changes, you should see a drastic reduction in the number of Directors and above. Wish everyone the best of luck in regards to whatever outcome you are looking for on Thursday.

What are these 'codes' you speak of ? I've never heard this before. These codes are for them for communicating verbally to one another ? Good grief

When I got RIF'd some years back I got a meeting invite in my calendar that was called "Technical Meeting" or something very vague like that as the subject and a WebEx link - with no other detail. Also everyone on the meeting was blind carbon copied (bcc). I immediately told my friend on another team I'm getting RIF'd. It was so obvious. It was dehumanizing and humiliating. If it's going to be a massive layoff chances are they will do it as a group not individual boss with a HR representative. Best of luck to all. What a company culture - a real life Lord of the Flies. I don't miss it at all.

For those of you that have received a 1x1 invite with your manager on Thursday, please post what business area you work in so we can get a better idea of who is getting these invites and who may be impacted.

I am not a manager or director level and I just received a random one on one with my manager for Thursday afternoon.

I’m Director Level and have no earthly idea if my area is being impacted. I’m very suspicious and the “writing on the wall” tells me that it probably is, but I haven’t been asked for any input or given any information at all. You can’t just assume that your functional leader has any knowledge of what is coming. They may be targets too. It stinks at every level.

I'm so glad I no longer work at this clown show organization. To any folks that get laid off, do yourself a favor and don't ever come back no matter what they may offer you in the future. It was the worst place I ever worked at. Pure 'culo' indeed.

Upper management uses code words for upcoming RIFs. The last one was code word “Culo”.

Ok folks listen up..Be in the know .. if getting Rif'd and you're eligible for retirement, You MUST ask for your retirement benefits, execute your retirement or however you want to approach it . Elevance will not tell you you are eligible. The ' severance package ' is handled differently, than just a Rif.. . You are eligible for unemployment benefits after your severance runs out. I'm just saying...

This place is total roomper room, bunch of kid's running around in circles. How embarassing for the grown ups who have to endure it.

Manager level employees are not told about the layoffs and would not know until that morning about who is being cut from their team (including themselves). If they are sending out invites for future meetings it doesn’t really mean anything. I had a manager that was conducting interviews when they were laid off.

I am confused with all these comments. Are we getting RIF'd on Thursday or are we getting 30,60, or 90 day notices?m Or is this just a TROLL.

Anyone know if managers are sending one on one invites for end of October ( but sending the invites today) should we assume we are probably safe? Like why would someone send the invite if they know you are about be laid off
Thanks

If you're laid off this Thursday could you please post your dept. or job title? I'm sure the layoffs will continue throughout the remainder of this year, and I just want to know if I need to accelerate my job hunting if my department gets impacted.

I suspect that I will get my walking papers this Thursday. My 1x1 was rescheduled from Monday next week to Thursday this week. Anyways I am prepared as I am busy looking for something else. This will help with a little cushion. Will let you know how things turn out.

I am a people leader. Numerous departments had discussions, this week with HR. Thursday is in-fact the day. You will have a meeting with your manager and then HR will join. There’s no way around how much this stinks for leaders who actually care about you. It’s forced upon us. This will be a large RIF. Some are saying 3-5%.

I volunteered! 40 years of service. But I don't want 90 days notice. I think Richmond Ricky got that special offer they made to associates some six or so years ago. I was offered that package, but at the time couldn't take it. Mostly 60 days. If I do get the axe and get 90 days still going to be doing nothing like I do now. And no way looking for another job. I will retire. Blessings to all of you.

People were measured/rated compared to their peers. This was done at the staff vp level and included all the employees below.
When it came time to cut jobs - if it was not solely based on dumping higher salaries - those low on the comparisons were the ones cut.
When functions are moved to big blue (like 3 years ago and a few weeks ago), those are different than layoffs/RIFs.

The number of days notice a RIF/laid off person gets depends upon the state. CA requires 60 days notice. 3 yrs ago when jobs were moved to big blue, there was about a 5 month notice. Not sure why.
The amount of people cut in a state can force a public statement by the company. Once upon a time in Ohio it was 100 or more.

This is a RIF Or reduction in force. It is not a lay off. With Lay offs workers are called back. With RIF it is instant termination. A employer in the USA can terminate your position with out warning. You are a “at will” employee. This is why this is not in any states W.A.R.N. Report that has a home office or any state. The last day of the quarter is 9/30. 9/21 is the Thursday of a non-pay week. That is RIF day. This same thing happened 3 months ago. Multiple RIFs on June 1st with no warning. Elevance stock has dropped $40 or 10% in the last quarter.but the new CFO coming is getting 1 million salary plus 4 million bonus this coming year. This is about $$$. RIF 10% looks good for upcoming quarter and profits.

Actually kinda smart of company to do 90 days. That way if anyone wants to eff them, they lose severance. I think 60 day notice is the law if mass layoff. Anyways, 90 days notice means they get plenty of time to inherit ppl's stuff. Here is a secret nobody tells you, as long as you transfer your stuff really easy to replace you even better if you decide to find another job. In fact, doing these types of massive and long layoffs are very good for anthem, very good. The employee has absolutely no leverage but gets enough time so they are focused on what jobs out there rather than giving their manager the middle finger on their way out as I did without notice.

It's always a bad sign when VP's start leaving the company and others start to use all of their PTO. I had a feeling something was up.

It will be 10% of the workforce in some departments.

if you get the notice, devote your 90 days to finding a new job. Don't work a minute over and certainly don't create helpful or accurate documentation of your responsibilities. Put a few conflicting things in it, or just don't do it.

Not a flat 10% of workers. Rather 10% of budget per cost center. This means under the same VP you may see a 50% cut in force while adjacent groups have no impact. This Thursday is the day. Won’t be the end of the cuts but this one is big enough to be felt all around. Very likely that VPs get cut in November.

To anyone 'in the know'.... Why don't they ask for volunteers that are ready and want to be riffed? Are they afraid the most talented and knowledgeable employees will volunteer, similar to what happened the last time the company offered an early retirement plan package?

Richmond Ricky here. When I was laid off some years back everyone got a 90 day notice. I even remember my offshore replacement took forever to contact me for cross training. I scheduled all my unused vacation time for the last 3 weeks and when he finally contacted me I laughed and told him I'm on vacation. I recommend anyone who gets laid off to do the same. Usually the last couple weeks is when panic sets in.

Layoffs will be happening on Thursday with the total numbers being around 5000. GBD is taking the larger hit over CSBD.
