Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Bloomington Surplus

25 union members who are collection reps just got the vtp (voluntary termination pay) to leave the company. This is up to 104 weeks pay depending on seniority. This is only the beginning. It is expected that more will be surplussed until all union workers in Leg T are gone. Luckily for them however, they get a generous package to move on, thanks to the union negotiated contract. The payout, including money and medical, dental and vision benefits is much better than the severance pay that low level managers get. Too bad for them. Sooner or later, we'll all be laid off.

That's an amazing buyout! I got a lousy 6 months pay after 26 years of service.

104 weeks seems fair and doable based on the laughably small salary these union guys take home.

Just go ahead and give it to them and move on from these whiny do-nothings.

@j1 lowly? HAHA!... Your 104 weeks is the same as my 6 months. Keep on waiting, and waiting, and waiting for that VTP. You’ll be 80 before you know it, you old coot!

@hd Most of us clearly know our roles, requirements and expectations and we do just this without going above and beyond or being instrumental blah blah blah... thus will never be on a PIP or be fired. Again, the company uses VTP as a strategic tool and most of us are happy to wait till the inevitable day our number is called. We're all going to be laid off. We Leg T union workers are glad to get the big time payout to leave. Especially in these times, it would $u-k to be a lowly manager.

@gz except minimal work doesn’t “work” for this role. Your workload will be increased and when you continue failing to meet the requirements of the job you will be put on a PIP and terminated for cause without severance. No VTP, no nothing. Seen it happen before, willing to bet it will happen again. Much easier and cheaper for them than paying you anything. Believe me when I tell you they will do anything to avoid paying that VTP.

@ew The point of this post is that the company is using VTP as a tool to shed Leg T union workers. Everyone involved knows this is happening so most everyone will simply hang out doing the minimal work and take advantage of all the many ways to get paid days off without getting fired. It's so easy to remain on the payroll while collecting nice paychecks, benefits, pension and 401K buildup, etc etc while laughing about the inevitable big payout of the VTP which will happen. The anticipation is really almost entertaining. Of course, it's understandable human nature for those who are not Leg T union workers to slam this from all directions - from financials to the mere logic - many arguments being seemingly valid, however there are important reasons for the company to want to get rid of older, high seniority Leg T union workers - and VTP is a legal and lesser expensive way to do this. For the worker, getting two years pay as a kicker to retire is a dream come true. It's a win/win deal.

@cv they know this and for that reason you’ll be waiting a lot longer. Best to just hang it up on your own terms like they want you to do

For the non believers, read the contract for the ones affected. Used to work for another telecom before joining SWBT. Had just under 20 years, was affected when they went thru a down sizing. Severance was 18 months at full pay, benefits and recall rights. It all depends on the how the contract is worded.

Totally farcical fantasy candy land post. Enough with the made up 104 weeks BS. Quit your daydreaming and get back to the truck and harness up.

If you stayed around long enough to get 104 weeks, you must be pushing 70 at least. I am not sure you have a lot to crow about still working at your age.

None of the other contracts pay involuntary severance to not at risk senior people. They only pay the much lower voluntary severance table payment to those willing to save the bottom seniority union member. I’ll have to look this up under labor relations in workday. All the contracts are posted there.

@a7 Actually that's not how it works. The company announces the number of surplus positions, which means it's that number of VTP slots, workers put in for it and because more than the surplus number put in for it, the highest seniority workers get it. If there weren't enough who put in for it, then Involuntary layoffs happen from the bottom of seniority. This rarely happens because there's always workers who want the VTP. It's like getting an awesome gift. Also, even the lowest seniority workers would get 6 months pay, not 2 weeks. Unfortunately for lowly managers who get let go, they get a few months of peanuts as severance pay - much less money than union workers. And for sure much less medical, dental and vision benefits.

If true, probably the most junior reps there are and got 2 weeks. Thats how that works. You guys holding out for the big payday are going to drop dead before you can ever cash any of those pension checks.
