I spent two decades here. I showed up every day, I gave it my all, I went above and beyond, I never once had a complaint about my work. And what did that get me? Nothing. I'm out of a job and looking back, I realize I was just a number to them. All that loyalty and effort didn't count for anything in the end.

@19m/@19c: I'm not sure what department you are in, but I have 20+ years and no one has ever said "we are a family" to me in my department or from the company.
@19c. I don't do anything illegal or unethical in my life or while at work, so I sleep soundly. If others in the company act that way, they should be fired and prosecuted. So I'm sure you have turned those employees in, right?

15 plus years working front lines, constantly being asked by our leadership thinks like "Where is your loyalty to Verizon?" and told things like "No, we are a family, we will take care of you."
It is that lie that cut some of us deeply.
@19c if you feel a job defines who you are then I pity you. I am not defined by my job but what I do outside of that. When I die it wont say where I worked any where on my tombstone.
@14b @14b then stop calling us family. How can you still defend them? You're ok with a company exploiting us? You're good with them breaking laws to do so? Then no it's more than just su-ks, it's not ethical and unlawful. Jobs do define you it's what you spend most of your time doing, more than with friends or even family. Then they don't want to pay you and your like that's how it is now. Then if that's so it's like that because of people like you who let them walk all over you and embolden them so thanks for being weak and getting walked over all your life that you find that behavior is just fine.
Im shocked with posts like this.. "company has no loyalty " or "i gave everything and got nothing". Its a job. It doesnt define you. There are other jobs out there. Does it su-k? Yes. Will it be hard? Probably. Is it the end? Never.
People need to understand that the goal of a company is to be as profitable as possible. And employees are just that, employees. Not family. Not friends.
Unless you are your own boss, there will never be loyalty.

@OP+1kxxq90p6 , I am assuming that twenty years ago, you willingly entered into an at-will employment agreement. You willingly agreed to exchange your “labor” for wages and benefits. So, you ask…”What did that get me?”

A more accurate way to explain your relationship with Verizon: You were a “Business Expense” that was paid a labor market wage for your services. Hopefully, your mortgage is paid off, you don’t have credit card debt, and you are in great health. Best of luck.
I learned this in 2018, after three years in VZW. Someone on the team also said the same thing after 25 years. This started my FIRE movement. I also became stupid for staying in Verizon. Then later in the same year, jobs started leaving the state to another state. I asked, can I work at home. Unofficially, the manager said yes, go ahead but report to office once a week.
I did not have to buy a car since then. All went into this crazy tech value burst.
Yep, and never keep any personal stuff at the desk or on the company computer. There is no loyalty either direction. Do the job you were hired for, and be done.
