Thread regarding CDW layoffs

What's the timeline?

I'm trying to understand how this works. When someone gets laid off, do they leave that same day or is there a period where they're expected to stay on? New here, if it's not obvious, and nobody on my team was affected this time, but I know it won't last and I'd like to know.

@OP In late June 2025 is when myself and MANY others were told we were being laid off, however our "end" date was 3/2/2026. We were free to look/apply for/interview for other positions within CDW, or outside, but in order to receive our severance we had to stay "in good standing" with our current position.
The last month (February 2026-March 2026) I not only had to do my own job, but I was also tasked with auditing the work of the people in another country who were taking my job. Talk about rubbing salt ina gaping wound. Our official reason for the layoffs were "shipping to offshore capabilities".
It's now July 2026 and I am STILL looking for another job. It's cutthroat out here and it's bullsh-t.

@ay This was a very useful post. I've just closed my social media pages to outsiders . I have also removed my customer information and pricing and stored them away. Thanks for the tip.

@b1 Thank you mystery coworker. That was the nicest thing we have heard from anyone. This is really difficult for me and my family. The loss of income will mean my family will be moving back in with my parents after I cleaned out my savings to help my sister with her cancer battle. Your kindness makes me feel we are not just a number. I only hope Miss Leahy finds it in her heart to also do the right thing.

@ay You forgot to mention that my Coworker Experience team will look into what you have that belongs to CDW and how much they owe you. We will work with payroll to make sure they collect any pay from your last check to pay for credit card expenses you owe and equipment you didn't return. We will normally ship you what you leave on your desk, although sometimes they give you time to clean up and go. In rare cases your manager will give you a date when you must depart and allow you to stay to help with the transition. Your badge will be turned off and collected during your term and so will the company credit card if you have one. They will give you one of my team's coworkers for you to ask questions about your release and answer questions about your benefits.

What matters most is that we are hurting too and disagree with a lot of how things are being handled. I strongly urge you to seek legal counsel to make sure you get all you deserve. We don't always agree with who is being released and what is being offered and they will help you sort through what is fair and why certain coworkers were selected. I am sharing this because the coworkers well being should always come first. I dedicated my entire career on that. Bless you all who were affected. You will all be missed.

First they make the list of who is getting booted. Then Legal looks at it to make sure there aren't any major lawsuit problems. They miss some red flags because they aren't told the entire story from the managers. Then it goes to safety and security who has a week or two to look up the coworkers' work records and recent police record and if you or your family members have g-ns registered. Then they will to scour your social media pages to see if you are a serious drinker, use weed or dr-gs, see who you hang out with, and if you show g-ns or odd statements or behavior. Safety and Security will also talk to the managers to see if you showed any fu---d up behavior or anger issues. If you did, they will plan on when and how to fire you and if they need to be hiding around a corner during your firing to make sure you behave. And yes, IT will freeze all emails so they can get them if you delete them before they fire you and you won't know because while you delete them, they aren't really gone. While being terminated, IT will wipe their phones and lock you out of your computer and emails. Sometimes, your contacts are gone too since they can do anything to your phone. It's their property. And they decide if you keep your phone, return it, or if you turn it in. That is why it is important to pull all of your customer information and contacts now and keep a file at home. You should also clean up your social media content and any bad posts . Layoffs aren't over so look for a better company to work at. I survived this one but started applying for other companies Friday. Did I miss anything?

@a7 oh I totally get it. I had access to sensitive information so I wasn’t surprised at all. Anyone who has access to company information like that will be let go immediately in most cases - even folks who quit and give 2 weeks are more likely to be let go same day.

It’s very standard protocol in most major companies to disable accounts as quickly as possible to prevent those being laid off from saving data, causing system harm (destroying work for example), escort them off premises, etc. Su-ks but people occasionally do decide to retaliate. I’ve seen it at myself at other companies.

Depends. Some folks are let go immediately, but others are given a date in the future. This year I know of at least one person who was informed last week but their last day is technically in August. I was told and my access was cut within minutes of ending the meeting.
