The Importance of Timesheet Accuracy

I've received a constant stream of chasers and reminders about timesheet entry in recent weeks. The organisation seems obsessed on this, which suggests there is a wider problem.

The assumption appears to be that this is primarily an employee issue. That may be true in some cases, but from my perspective the root causes are systems and process related.

Common examples include:

  • It taking an excessive amount of time for a WBS to be created and allocated to an employee's profile.
  • Timesheets that were submitted on time get reopened sometime later by someone else.

We seem to be investing a considerable amount of effort in chasing employees, and then having those staff raising HR cases to get individual weeks resubmitted. That effort would be better spent delivering value to our clients. Yet none of that value add features in our stock FY27 objectives.

More emails today - do your timesheet now, today, through until July. If there was a WBS for reading emails about WBS codes and timesheets and filling in timesheets, I'd be billing 100% of my time to that! Once submitted it gets approved by my manager, my manages manager and the system, so I guess they can't get much done other than timesheets eithers.

@jr We've been instructed to submit them around the 15th to cover through to month end, because the great new system takes so long to run a report that they need to start 2 weeks early to avoid not being able to bill clients on time. We could just bill the rest of the year right now if you ask me!

There were at least 25 email replies all cc'ing all 400+ recipients on a group do your timesheet email last week.

At 30 seconds a read to see if it's relevant. That wasted 80+ hrs. What WBS do we bill company incompetence to?
