Things started going south around 10 years ago when the consultants and ex-Gap people took over and pushed the company to flood the market with anything that would sell - Jordan’s, Roshes, Tempo shorts and ki-led innovation.
@hs You nailed it! The pay disparity case is still not over. They are scheduled to go to trial in July.
@fm MP did not leave company in upswing and good standing with succession plan that worked like Steve Jobs when he was forced to resign due to the illness.
But ultimately where MP made mistake looking back is when he took the eyes off the main reason why Nike grew. And that is design, design, design tied up with great endorser, great background story and effective marketing effort.
It is true that Nike enormously under MP's watch. But as company grew he let things go out of control and had to leave hurriedly and hand it down to perfect candidate "d-mb a-s JD" and I am being sarcastic here.
In summary, under MP Nike saw incredible growth but his inability control his inner cronies and running tight ship led to today's downfall which Nike may not recover ever.
So will discuss here forever if MP was good CEO. I made my case.
@eb Things were good for Nike under MP because Nike had momentum. But with all the scandals under him that happened and short sightness which JD inherited and took it farther. And last but not least, Nike pivoting from design to data, it started under MP.
I will be fair, MP's administration was good first half. But last half is where things started going out of control and JD was perfect candidate to fu-k up.
@fc sir it was MP who closed all small independents, mid independents and most of the large independents. I was there. MP is not d-mb JD but he was one who threw the match at gasoline. And started the fire.
MP closed many dealers who were good, dedicated and connection to the community. And replaced it with one for all Nike store.
That would be like Nike laying you off regardless how you are competent, dedicated and committed. You know the feeling
The fact you included MP on this list tells us you’re a know-nothing. Well that, and the I’M A 80 YEAR OLD POStING LIKE I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS INTERWEBS THING vibe.
MP as CEO was good, him in general as a person though well he was either part of harassment scandals or turned a blind eye.
So by the numbers… good. By the principles… nope.
I AM YELLING CARL!
Get a therapist.
Why would you include MP in the list of bad CEOs?
MP was there for 14 years, from 2006 to 2020. In his time, Nike grew from $15 billion to $39 billion. He basically extended what PHK did and ramped it up. There were issues with some of the senior leaders under him for sure, but the company and employee culture continued to thrive in his era. However, when he retired and they brought JD in for 4+ years, that's when everything got irredeemably broken. And EH doesn't have the chops to fix the brand relevance or lost culture, so the company is in deep, deep trouble. PHK is too old and there's no known talent in the wings, so it looks like they are going to sink in the same way Adidas did when they were the giant.
MP once said that his biggest fear was that Nike would get too big and have the hubris to think they could slap a Swoosh on anything and it would sell. Unfortunately, that's exactly where Nike is.
