Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

No More PDRs?

There are now no more PDRs? What does this mean? Is it just another nail in the coffin of getting a new position/career progression? I guess there won’t be any need for them if there aren’t any jobs to post in a PDC.

@jn Actually no. How done employers view it, is that people left, others were forced, but those that stayed had no choice. Stay frosty.

The PDCs where just a facade to make people believe that there was a chance of a career or promotion. All this stuff is/was pre-determined which is how other companies I've worked for did it.

PDCs are only for 24+ going forward so you don’t need as robust a slate of PDRs.

HEY - some of the formers resemble that remark... and they bought into the lie before they knew it was a lie... (but had a few years to benefit from the lie to situate)... there's a point where it's too late to change course without being seen... it's a balance between reality and the ultimate brittleness of the house of cards.

That being said, I think the strongest stock position that one could buy in to is Enron.

There are just no jobs posting in a continuously shrinking company so no need for the old process. There will be successive rounds of AI layoffs in the next several years.in fact AI can replace the PDRs and their calendar and grading curves.

Remaining talent will increase their marketshare in a declining market.

Another sign of a declining company. Yes, PDRs almost always were technical has-beens, never-weres, or no-skills repatriating expats. However, there was some semblance of honesty and fairness that you could plead your case to an impartial (but perhaps clueless) party. What Chevron is saying now is that moves will be limited, no formal company-wide process, and your manager controls the switch (he/she won't let go of good people, dregs will be unwanted). Whatever job you are in by around year 10 will most likely be the job for the rest of your career.

I guess that leaves us slackers out. Unless a boss wants you to move.

Based on last year’s selection event, I heard that it could also work out to the direct report’s advantage.

Agree that it sets up a potential conflict of interest.

PDRs were the biggest waste of skin in the company - dozens of PSG27 people traveling the globe, making speeches, enjoying boozy dinners with local middle management, and sitting in tiny conference rooms with hundreds of hapless employees, one by one, asking them about their pathetic career plans (they all aspire to be CEO/MD/GM). Good riddance!

Putting your current boss in place as your PDR creates a lot of perverse incentives.

Push bad employees onto other groups? Halt career progression for good employees by sabotaging their ability to move to other groups? Create all sorts of transactional opportunities where employees can be coerced into doing things they don't want to do in exchange for a way forward? Yep, it's about to become normal.

@dg - Basically @bh means is that your career development, growth and transition into a new role is dependent on your manager/supervisor. Thus, if you are good at your role and to "business critical" for a role or just want out of a role......good luck getting approval to move. Otherwise, that bad boss ultimately holds the keys, effectively removing a 3rd party person (PDR) who could override the manager/supervisor.

@dc what does your comment even mean?

@bh
If your boss represents you then you can never leave a bad boss.

There will continue to be PDCs. PDRs are just being replaced by your supervisor representing you instead. You also won't be able to contact the job owners anymore. Basically, you apply and if job owners think you're qualified, they contact you or your supervisor for more information. They're just making things less chaotic and time demanding.

@OP
My LT told me the PDC's are over and there will no longer be an opportunity to "post" in the PDC for transfers. There "may" be managed moves through management but the only open positions that will be available will be in low cost countries, the "Engine", Argentina and Manila. Employment in the USA is flat or declining at Chevron and the jobs are moving overseas.
