Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Layoff with PIP

I just got a PIP. Given the current state of the company and the layoffs, would you think I will be axed at the end of the improvement period?

no PIP here for years (I've been a good standing FTE for a few years now) and they still JE'd me.

@tt I do think that what the company is facing now is unprecedented but in the past, layoffs targeted poor performers.

@tn With the exception of one awful high band 5, all the people I know that got laid off on 1/29 were top performers. It is coming on the tails of 2025 earnings so 100% cost based

My experience is that low performers are the first to go.

@ed it's a cowardly manager that does this.

Here at this company, a senior or manager or director does not mean leader.

Why in this environment would you get on a PIP? Do yourself a favor and apply somewhere else.

Was it warranted? Or is your manager using you as a scape goat to cover for their incompetence? If it is the latter, get your documentation together and make sure the HR rep has it.

@d4 Performance Improvement Plan. A formal document given to an employee to address poor performance, outlining specific goals, feedback, and a timeline to improve, often leading to termination if not met.

I worked at ESI, Cigna, etc. for almost 20 years. I knew many people who got PIPed. Two of them were directors. One went onto have a decent career after surviving the PIP. The other resigned after a few months due to stress, even though he survived the initial 30 day + 30 day period. His management was basically bent on letting him go. PIP is very serious.

Once PIP starts, your manager is assigned an HR partner who does a fantastic job of straddling the fine line between pretending to care about you and the worker. Make no mistake, they are there to protect the company.

Definitely start looking for another job, but don't assume that it's a lost cause. HR partner is deathly afraid of legal blowback, so don't be afraid to feign legal route to keep them on the edge. Make sure they're setting clear and reasonable expectations, and document everything that you're doing to meet them. And have everything in writing.

Chances are, there are dozens or hundreds who are getting pipped. The goal is to make it more difficult and risky for them to go through with your PIP compared to others.

But they fire you unjustly and you have the paper trail to prove retaliation, they’re the ones that need to watch out, my spouse is attorney in employment law and if you’re willing to deal with the headache there’s far more than a severance package they stand to lose. Happens all the time they just hope we stay uninformed and to get rid of us first.

The dead guy from Weekend At Bernie’s has worked here for years and hasn’t been put on a PIP. Look elsewhere immediately

I agree, the only reason you put someone on PIP asa manager is to start a paper trail to for you in the next few months. No matter how good you do you will be fired, not layoff.

Start looking for a new job today.

PIP is there to give them a paper trail to fire you, without severance. Start looking for a new job.

Most usually a pip is just a formality in the firing process.

OMG. move on, you don't want even a passed PIP hanging over you. This is like 'double-secret probation' or something. You'll never get promoted when they store this secret in the top of your HR file, forever. Apply elsewhere now.
