Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

The end of the anxiety

If I get cut, at least the dreadful waiting game is over. I can stop jumping at every email and start dealing with the actual problem instead of the fear of it.

@j2 your shrink is right. Nike is toxic! TH supports the unethical behavior and abuse. There aren’t many real leaders left. It’s people kissing *ss and those that have dirt on others who are protected. If you know their secrets it’s really time to tell the truth. Upon departure if you must but let’s stop protecting the fake leaders that are the root cause of your mental health issues. Expose these so called leaders!

get as much as you can out of nike while you're with them, classes, skills, use it as a place to learn, build resume, then move on.....they actually encourage this behavior and will gladly pay to train so you can leave with no severance, take it

If you are laid off considerate a blessing! You are working in a toxic culture for a company that doesn’t give a damn about you as an individual. They don’t care about the work that you do or your mental health. I strongly encourage you to continue looking for other employment and document everything. Everyone is replaceable and unfortunately at Nike what really matters is who’s b*** you are kissing and where they sit in the VP lineup!

Be nice to find another job that pays at least the same at nike, seems some on here have been able to do that, how is that? I've been sending resumes out for a while and zero results! tech.....

Agree with mental health and harmful to be living in fear of being laid off....very much not good and I question the ability to do anything meaningful while at nike in this state

“ Been in the game a long time. Layoffs and drama happen at most companies. You can work for an amazing company and have a terrible boss and role or work for a terrible company and have an amazing boss and role. It’s a role of the dice.”

I have worked for several large companies. While it’s true layoffs are reality at nearly every company today, the difference is that those companies are not outright toxic.

OP - Do what others suggest and actively look. You don’t have to accept another position but you might find one that you cannot turn down.

Constant fear of being let go was one of the primary reasons I left 18 months ago. Being laid off is a problem for anyone it happens to, but it’s especially a problem for people like me over the age of 40. While I had a solid reputation and did good work, the layoffs of the past several years taught me that those things don’t matter if someone decides your time is up. I figured it was better to find a new job while I still had one and to leave on my own terms rather than suffer the indignity and stress of being told to bounce.

I genuinely enjoyed most of my time at Nike. Those last couple of years though, I had a hard to describe intuition that it was time to go. So I did.

Aside from missing some of my colleagues I don’t regret leaving one bit. These days I no longer go to work wondering how much time I have left. And it’d be difficult to overstate how much that improved my mental health.

I was impacted last June and it was brutal but I landed a new role within 2 months doing all the things others are mentioning (networking, focusing on roles I wanted to be in, looking in more stable industries). It has been a great blessing given the stress of having multiple young children. I wouldnt want to relive that day but I am grateful how it played out since I dont have to worry about being let go every 6 months. Best of luck!

My shrink suggested just straight-up quitting, as this job is “destroying your mental health”. I’ve been applying to positions outside Nike for a year tho, with very few bites. I’ll leave when they point me to the door or I find another job, but their statement, which they said they didn’t suggest often, made me kind of flinch. I guess it really is that bad here. Stay strong OP!

Bro, honestly I'd question any engineering role applicant coming from Nike. I have not had a good experience with level of talent I've had to work with.

in a non merit based society
the only thing you can do is kiss the butt of the people above you

it never used to happen often, companies were much more stable
it is the immediate cheapening and financialization of the US economy
which can only last so long before it collapses

Been in the game a long time. Layoffs and drama happen at most companies. You can work for an amazing company and have a terrible boss and role or work for a terrible company and have an amazing boss and role. It’s a role of the dice. Between my partner and I, we’ve been through 12 layoffs over the years. I’m not trying to scare you or seem negative but it happens, especially in certain fields and certain times. Always keep up your skills, stay up with your savings and live within your means.

The true ending of this (current) anxiety is to leave. Either being laid off (my case) or resigning. Either way moving on is enough for your brain to start worrying about new things, not the same ol' ones. Don't fool yourself thinking it'll end problems, but dealing with the same one forever is the worst. New job, new problems, new energy.

Why wait until then? Take control today. Network, apply, interview, turn offers down or accept them. Take pro-active action today and what the email says will not matter.

The greatest relief in my tenure at Nike eas seeing that 15 min VP meeting show up on my calendar. The beginning of BLISS.
