Is it better to vacation out or try to take the year’s worth of vacation before you leave?
I’m looking at the vacation policy and it says you can’t use vacation from previous year to vacation out. Anyone know how it works? Don’t want to ask HR because I’m not telling them I’m retiring yet

@h9 Did they change that rule in the last three months?
@h9, So you mean just like every other company. That may in fact be the only thing that Chevron is doing right this time around. They give out so much money hand over fist to employees who do not earn it or even do much of anything I'm surprised they get anything right these days.
@fg Unfortunately the rules have changed. Now we only get paid for EARNED unused vacation. So, for example, if you have 5 weeks of vacation this year and leave at some point during the year, you will be paid out for ONLY the portion of the 5 weeks that you have earned by your employment end date (not the full 5 weeks of vacation mentioned in this example).
This is another subtle but impactful reduction to our benefits that Chevron implemented a few years ago.
When Inleft with a great package in 2000, I got paid for all my untaken vacation. Was fairly sizable. I used it along with my one year’s salary to support my expenses in retirement for a year and a half.
@am Oh, FFS, don’t get your pa-ties in a knot!

OP
I plan to accrue my vacation and get paid out. My thoughts are after I leave it will take me several months to find a job so I will use the money while I am off work.
But if you want to take it while employed you can take 2 weeks more than you have earned and they don’t t claw it back. So you would get an extra 2 weeks without actually earning it.
@a4 In practice, you can get the whole year vacationed out, not just the accrued. I know thats not what the policy says, but that’s what will happen. Go ahead and ask HR.
Is this the layoff site? I heard there was a site specifically about layoffs and layoff related posts and information. If this is not it, can someone please post a link? I'm not interested in generic meaningless company chit-chat and questions from employees who don't want to ask the proper personnel so they post questions like in all the pathetic online chat groups for losers who can't communicate without a cellphone.
Thanks.
Vacation out if you can as you will only be paid for time earned up to your termination date. You will be taxed higher for vacation payout too, so using it is in your best interest. The only days you want to be paid out are your 2 floating holidays.
