Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Why RTO is a bad idea

Unfortunately, the office I left due to covid is not the same as what I will return to with the latest building updates. We lost cubes and dedicated desks so Ford can chase the fad of open office space. I've been in several times recently and find it loud and horribly distracting. Our leaders seem to think we spend all day collaborating, but that's just not the case for everyone. We are already short on conference rooms with less that 10% of people in the building since everyone uses them to get some peace and quiet.

I also have not seen any real data that shows that working from home is not effective. People keep blaming the quality problems on wfh, but no data to support. Causation versus correlation. They don't seem to acknowledge the other factors that correlate with the warranty issues: job cuts with no reduction in workload over the past 5+ years, the Smart Redesign, reduction in test vehicles without correlated analytical DV methods.

Perfectly summed up by @yjk+1kChFamd.

@1nzk. Yes, it is always best when you don't have the interruptions of sharing information with coworkers. That way you can protect your own little niche for years. That is how healthy organizations function.

I still wfh. Getting more work done and getting an hour more sleep each day (I drove an hour each way every day). Much happier.

When I worked at the office, my co-worker used to overhear my phone conversations and then immediate come over to my cube to discuss the conversation (why certain decisions were made, what my thoughts were, etc.). This used up a few hours each day. Now, I don't get those interruptions anymore.

Open Office was starting before COVID. Regent Court remodel removed cube walls.

Also, our worst performing vehicles from a quality standpoint were almost all launched before WFH even started.

"I returned to office in PDC. They simply removed all the cubical walls, the left one monitor for every two cubes. I do not see many of the fancy stuff in the campus transformation video. If you are a head-down working type of person, it is getting much worse than I expected. You can hear other people talking on webex half way through the building. Pretty much every one is wearing the headphone."
Yep, that's open office, its great for people who sit close and constantly need to collaborate and its fine for managers and people who are on webex meetings all day with headsets on. But for people who need to think (like engineers) and create, its the worst possible environment. I'm a software developer (2 years at ford before august 2022 layoff) and I worked for 3 years at another company that had open office. I had to play LOUD music on the headphones and even then sometimes it was not enough. Management says its for "collaboration" but what quickly happens is you get people mixed around with teams spread out and you get all the noise but no colocation of all your team members. Unless you need to collaborate constantly, its of no value anyway. Good luck! I'm contracting now and only accepting 100% remote work, sc--w WFO done with that forever.

@tes Russian trolls trying to foment insurrection on the Ford Layoffs site? Boy, I've heard of a stretch, but this one takes the cake. Whats next, tying blizzard conditions in Nepal to too many golf ba--s flying through the air in Florida, which was caused by mass retirements at Ford?

Take the tin foil hat off and you'll feel better.

I've noticed there are quite a few troll-types coming here that either will attack and insult entire groups or categories of employees or will make political type comments (generally of the kind that is heard on Hannity's show). On another thread here, one troll said (I paraphrase) that WFH employees are basically slackers not doing work. Who can make such a sweeping statement, only the individual people leaders know what their people are doing?

Ignore these trolls. They get their rocks off on making people mad. Some of them might even be English speaking Russians, sewing discontent here. You doubt that? Search for info about the troll farms in St. Petersburg Russia, owned by Yevgeny Prigozhin!

I am a long time employee and I do like WFH. The quiet, flexibility, and lack of interruptions have be fantastic.

My team added new people just before the pandemic and has added a few more during. We also lost people due to retirements and transfers to other areas.

It has been hard for our new people to learn. Our processes are documented and we do WebEx but the absence of Casual Learing (or whatever you want to call it) has been a handicap. Our new people are not as up to speed as they should be and they are frustrated.
