Thread regarding Ford layoffs

I don't get the RTO backlash

I'm a foreigner. I live 45 minutes on a good day from Dearborn. I would love to RTO and still be employed at Ford.

I became SIRP in August. While enjoyed WFH, I preferred being at Ford with the benefits. Yes I'm working on job opportunities that pay more, but factoring benefit costs and smaller bonus it will be a net pay cut.

But here is the biggest thing. My visa status. Since I need sponsorship my job search is hampered and the job opportunities are less. I am having to work legally to stay in the country while looking for a job.

I was highly rated at Ford. I am still at a loss as to why I was selected. I would gladly commute everyday again like I did prior to March 2020 in order to have remained at Ford. To see so many entitled here claiming that they can not, will not, and never will RTO, and still at Ford is disheartening.

If you are against RTO mandate why not do the needful and leave for a WFH opportunity. If that is your biggest concern? I am at a loss as to why you are against it. It hurts to see that attitude considering my situation.

@2aiu+1kChFamd I would love to be at the plant supporting one of my launches constantly. Problem is I have multiple vehicle programs in different stages and have to balance the workload. Spending a day at the plant needs to be a significant issue to justify my time.

It doesn't help that the last 2 times I got called to a plant to look at an issue the root cause was obvious and wasn't my component. Our "boots on the ground" are often not doing a good job of supporting us which hardens our resistance to coming in.

OP: This post looks "fishy" and I think you're not a "foreigner" who needs RTO at all. I think you are a troll wanting to stir things up. Your post makes no sense that you are "hurt" because others who don't even know you or your situation are not supporting RTO just because supposedly YOU need it to stay in the U.S. Nobody here knows who you are and you KNOW THAT! LOL, Nice try but I"m not fooled.

The backlash is because the lazy and unproductive don't want the gravy train to end.

Just look at the whining in this thread. "I don't get my own desk!" "I'm too close to my coworkers!" "I need privacy so I can peruse Amazon all day!" Wahhhhhhhhhh!

Remember you are only a number, not a person to companies…don’t fall for the “we care about you” get what you need then move on. Loyalty means lower pay.

I don’t know what all the complaining is about. Look there have been some in this company who have been coming in supporting production since May of 2020 putting our health on the line while most of you complaining have been sitting on your butts at home. And yes, most at home have not been productive. Try launching a vehicle and having issues and the response from the PD launch engineer is I can’t come in because it’s my work from home. We wonder why we have quality issues and bad launches. It’s because of lazy complainers on this site. Ask any PVT/VO engineer how they feel supporting most of Ford. We’ll tell you that the bulk of you can just leave the company because we end up fixing the garbage you left us.

@OP. While I don't like seeing people losing their jobs, I don't like your attitude for those that we still have our jobs. RTO or not RTO, someone decided your contributions are no longer needed @ Ford. Sorry to hear that. However, that doesn't give you the "moral ground" to launch an attack others. If it hurts you to see Ford workers trying to defend their "perks", I'd advise you to redirect your eyes to others, and more pressing, matters in your life, like finding a new job, and leave FMC in the past. After all, FMC is not your company anymore.

@qtq+1kChFamd I was already in the open office environment before 2020. Coming to the office is not the end of the world, even when it will make things harder for everybody. Now, going through a lot of useless hoops to end in the streets, without the "lot of money" job you talk about, that is not smart. As long as I can delay RTO, I will. If we can force RTO to once or twice a month, I'll be happy.

To the OP, I'm sorry that many of comments are full of hatred. Immigrants are at the heart of our American story and part of what make the country great. My grandparents came here for work and housing after WWII, and I'm proud to be part of that legacy. I hope that you are able to find another position and can stay. And while I can understand the bitterness you may feel about people voicing concerns about RTO given your current situation, the real quarrel is with members of the executive leadership. I agree with the poster who says that there's a misconception that we all collaborate non-stop all day long. The truth is that many of us have proven that we're able to collaborate effectively in a remote environment and spend much of our day needing to focus on tasks that align with the company's objectives. A noisy and peopled open-office environment is not conducive to that kind of work, and there is PLENTY of data to support that fact.

Please don't blame the foreign Immigrant. Place the blame on the US government. Our level is being lowered, while outsiders level is being raised! Nuff said.

@OP Here's an option for you..... since the companies in this country are so unfair, why dont you go back to where you came from? Come on, do a pros/cons assessment and realize that the weather here stinks. Taxes are too high. People are unfriendly and unwelcoming. People have opinions that are contrary to yours (which is completely unacceptable). Uggggghhhh, I think you should go back to where you would be happiest. If you pack your bags now, you can be home tomorrow.

True 'nuf, doesn't cost you anything but a tiny amount of time to make a request to be full time remote. Of course the best time to do that was last spring, but nothing says you can't try pursuing it now.

I guess I should've requested that I be contractually be provided a desk with at least cube walls when I hired in. Of course I was under the foolish assumption that Ford valued the productivity and quality they were hiring me for, neither of which is helped any by open floor plans

Ford Blue rolled out the hybrid work model last April. Unless you took steps with your people leaded to become full time remoted, you are on the hybrid model so bringing you into the office whether sporadically or on a fixed schedule is fair game.

If you don't want to come back into the office ever, request full time remote status or quit.

@yjk+1kChFamd you make a good point. But I think some of that speaks the entitled mentality the OP mentions. No one is promised their own desk at work when they hire in. Very few of those now clamoring to continue work from home were not hired as remote when they came into the company.

The company pays you all a lot of money, and asking you to come in 3-4 days a week, even in an open office environment, isn't the end of the world some of you make it out to be.

There are other options for staying in the country. Especially if you are married to someone on a Visa themselves.

If the foreigner is still without a job after 60 days of getting laid off in August then he has already breached his visa conditions. If the immigration dept finds out he will be doing his RTO from a jail cell somewhere awaiting deportation.

Unfortunately, the office I left due to covid is not the same as what I will return to with the latest building updates. We lost cubes and dedicated desks so Ford can chase the fad of open office space. I've been in several times recently and find it loud and horribly distracting. Our leaders seem to think we spend all day collaborating, but that's just not the case for everyone. We are already short on conference rooms with less that 10% of people in the building since everyone uses them to get some peace and quiet.

I also have not seen any real data that shows that working from home is not effective. People keep blaming the quality problems on wfh, but no data to support. Causation versus correlation. They don't seem to acknowledge the other factors that correlate with the warranty issues: job cuts with no reduction in workload over the past 5+ years, the Smart Redesign, reduction in test vehicles without correlated analytical DV methods.

Can I go to your country, be welcomed with open arms and get a real nice job ? . . . I didn't think so. Everyone comes here to 'take take take' so yeah - I'm going to 'take some' for myself too. I'll take WFH thank you.
