Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Will not be able to sleep tonight...

Anyone else has stress, mental and anxiety problems. I just cannot work today. I had trouble sleeping over the weekend. My wife says that I should stop thinking about it, but I cannot. Trying to meditate, helps a little bit but it's hard. I am thinking many of us are in the same position. How do you cope????????????????????/

Not to diminish or invalidate OP's or anyone's feelings right now, but just sharing a bit of a different situation if it helps to put things into perspective: 5 days of pins and needles is disgustingly inhumane (and certainly bad optics for the new CEO) but imagine being placed on a PIP (Performance Improvement Plan) and having to go through 30 DAYS of wondering if you will still be employed at the end. It's extremely demoralizing and a slap in the face to those of us who feel its implementation wasn't a genuine effort to "save a good employee" but more of a legal way to push someone out - especially when your past annual reviews were excellent. Newsflash: HR is NOT your friend.

I am not saying the PIP situation is worse; just saying that 30 days was ki-ler to those of us who experienced the gaslighting and daily pressure to "improve or else". And when we were pushed out, we didn't get any severance or extension of our healthcare benefits. It is cruel after making the company millions. While a layoff is painful, and stress-inducing, it can be less drawn-out than a PIP.

@OP: Hang in there. It's easy for me to say don't get worked up but these things are beyond your control. Give yourself some grace, lean on your loved ones for support, enjoy some laughs because life is too freakin' short... there will be other jobs and careers waiting for you; TGT isn't the end all be all. Be thankful for your life partner, your family and your good health hopefully. And whatever the outcome - life goes on.

Wishing you all the best outcome tomorrow.

@ag terrible advice. Sure, nobody should apply to jobs via the job board, but definitely cold apply to jobs you see on job boards through the company’s website. Networking is highly overrated and not the only way to find a job.

PSA: Hiringcafe.com has the highest quality postings and is monitored by the creators for ghost jobs and other dead end job posts.

Target hires talented people. You will all be ok, if not better off. I spent nearly 2 decades at Target and should have left far earlier. Spend the time productively. DO NOT cold apply for jobs on job boards-network. That is the only way. Don't let a poorly lead company define you. You all have great things ahead.

@OP you have no control over this so put your energy into what you can control. Update your resume, download your performance reviews, update your LinkedIn, make a list of company’s you can apply to, review your finances, set a budget, make a list of people in your network to contact. I got laid off with no warning earlier this year, and to be honest, I was pretty meh about it after worrying it was coming for over a year. It doesn’t feel like it right now, and those feelings are valid, but you’re going to be okay no matter what happens.

Humans tend to overestimate how bad a negative experience will be, in reality if you get laid off it will be painful but not nearly as painful as you perceive it will be. This is scientifically proven by many studies, so try not to let yourself overestimate how bad it will be.

A other mindset changes you can try, fully accept the situation you're in. Once you fully except it, it can not have power over you. Try to sit with yourself and truly accept that there are pending layoffs and you might be affected and be okay with that.

Easier said than done without any previous practice, but it's important to stay present, and to watch your mind and not let it create a future that doesn't exist. The only thing that's real is the present.

I keep repeating that I might lose my job, but I can update my resume, network, save money, and look at other options. If it happens, I’ll handle it. If not, I’ve still grown stronger...

Don’t waste energy fighting reality and things that are to come.
Control your own actions and thinking, not the world around you (including Target).
No matter what happens, you will still be you, you are not Target and you are not your work. You can change work, but you will still be you. Love yourself.

I wish they’d just send the emails and get it over with. This waiting is painful!

@OP you don’t have any choice. That’s how. I feel the exact same way as you. Just feel like lamb being led to the sla-ghter. Feel sick nonstop. It’s awful. You just cope by doing nothing. This is honestly such a cruel way to do this.

Block your thoughts.
You will not be able to do it 100% but even if you block 50% you'll be 50% better.
Works for me.
Godspeed!
