Executive promotions

Can anyone shed light on how promotions to CL30 work? Of course, one needs to have exec potential.

Does one need an Exec sponsor? Is two consecutive Outstanding enough to get there after CL29?

Please FACTS only ... no bul--hit ... all cr-bab-es only read and learn ... don't need BTC/KLTC as well ...

OP if you’re here asking, then you are definitely not a high potential chosen one

One of the biggest lies told to keep people working here is that you have executive potential. Do not believe it.

29 HiPos get multiple more RSUs than 29 non HiPo for the same performance assessment outcome.
Takes many years of O in a row for a 34 pot 29 to make in RSU what a 29 38+ Pot gets in 1 year

That travesty is worse than missing out on the promotion to 30

I agree with @b0

And while it is not just about the absolute money it is a relative issue. These high potential people being paid more for delivering less is really demotivating.
Fortunately or unfortunately EM will never know how much more could be done if the VPs and Presidents actually knew how to motivate and make better people decisions

Oh well. Off to (sort of) work on another Monday.

@b0 is 100% accurate. I am in this group where I should be considered for Exec but likely won’t because I don’t brown nose enough. Regardless, I’m working with several contacts on moving out of the company. If you’re a hard worker and knowledgeable, there is opportunity for you elsewhere. Not XOM.

It requires President approval and there are only so many slots. And if you don’t have at least a VP sponsor there is little chance. Presidents don’t have courage to approve or advocate for someone unless POT38+

What they also don’t tell you is it is not so much about your proven performance or capability but their view of your potential. It is a very skewed interpretation of meritocracy. You can even successfully complete multiple executive level roles where others in similar roles are executive but you aren’t. Typically this is because they have higher potential than you.
Top talent are starting to see this and leave even if they are in the top categories of 28-29 for many years.
But hey, some of those high potential people MAY eventually have more capability.
Good luck with that.

Every promotion outside of the advancement guide (27 or 28 depending on the org) is subject to management discretion. You need PMG approval and very likely that is multiple levels above your boss for 29->30.

So in practice, the person signing that approval needs to know who you are.
